I said maybe.....
But I don't like Rudess, there I said it.
- Mark Knopfler
- Satriani
- Steve Rothery
- Gary Moore
Out of them, I have almost no Knopfler or Rothery in my playing style, but would like to change that. They epitomise melody, emotion and feel for me. Knopfler made me play air guitar for the first time and Rothery is the soundtrack of my life really, from very early teens to current day. He has a sound that's immediately identifiable, and his solo work on Jigsaw, Incubus, Fugazi, Forgotten Sons and 3 Boats Down from the Candy always raises the hairs on the back of my neck to this day.Satriani and Moore excite me and have a rare ability to retain melody even when playing fast. For me, Satriani has lost his way now, but everything from Surfing, through FIABD, The Extremist and Crystal Planet is some of my favourite ever music.
Gary Moore, in both his rock and blues phases had such a fantastic approach to soloing, whilst Midnight Blues is the perfect 'lights down, eyes shut, glass of wine, immerse in the music' song for me.

Players with feeling.
is it crazy how saying sentences backwards creates backwards sentences saying how crazy it is?

Very difficult....this is based on who I have listened to and enjoyed most consistently over my guitar playing life:
Jimi Hendrix.... the greatest and always an inspiration
J Mascis - I was in tears during the solo of Out There at a recent Dinosaur Jr gig. Epic.
Kim Thayil - I love Soundgarden, what he brings to the songs and his unusual approach to riffs and soloing.
Scott Gorham
Mike Einziger
George Harrison
Glenn Tipton
James Dean Bradfield
John Sykes
Alex Hutchings
The first one is easy as for me, it simply has to be Gary Moore and that choice hasn't changed in a long time. For me, Gary Moore was the complete package as he could shred as fast as anyone but also played with bags more feeling than any other guitarist I've ever heard.
I think my second choice would have to be Jeff Healey because when I did finally see him play live, I remember my jaw was on the floor most of the night. He was an insanely talented guitarist.
I think my third choice is far less obvious but I just really like Adrian Smith. The fact that one of his major influences is Gary Moore is probably partly why his playing appeals to me. I love the way he has constantly evolved and developed as a player, always pushing himself. I also love the way he never really shreds for the sake of it but solos are carefully crafted and have a strong melodic feel to them.
Satriani

2. A. Lifeson
3. V. Reilly
James Burton - just check any of the live stuff with Elvis
Steve Cropper - Any of the Stax material
Mark Knopfler - I've often deflected comments about how "boring" his music is but they just don't appreciate the amazing feel to his playing!
Charlie Christian
Kossoff
