Today's, very tired, entirely propped up on caffeine answer:

Rory Gallagher - quite a lot of the time that's the sound in my head when I pick up a guitar

Jim Campilongo - I don't think I listen to much just for the guitar playing except maybe some of Jim C's where I can still enjoy a meh tune just because it has him playing on it.

Earl 'Chinna' Smith - he has a massive discography and I don't know much about him really but I worked out he is a link between some of my favourite records so I have probably listened to him play more than anybody else, ever.

    Right, see you tomorrow...

    Mine would have to be:

    1) Syd Barrett- innovative, interesting and very English!

    2) Steffy Sharpstrings (from Here&Now)- Spacey and trippy like Steve Hillage but more punky and loose. I love Hillage, but Mr Sharpstrings has more 'edge'.

    3) Will Sergeant- Like Syd, Will Sergeant always sounded like he was always at the edge of his technique and still pushing. His guitar playing was always very psychedelic and made those early Bunnymen albums.

    Chuck Berry

    Neil Young

    Ritchie Blackmore

    In no particular order...

Andy Summers ( has he been mentioned? Phrasing and chord choices are excellent)

    David Gilmour, natch.

Stephen Stills - acoustic or electric, the man is a genius.

and then way too many too list...  Dave Gilmour and Alex Lifeson would be strong contenders but very close behind would be Vai, Lukather, Moore, Knopfler depending on my mood and the songs.

impossible not to put David Gilmour at #1 after that #2 goes to Doyle Bramhall II (great mix of SRV, Hendrix and Lenny Kravitz all rolled into one)

#3 can't decide out of 4/5 people but lets say James Hetfield
