I personally think most guitarist are better in a band that is greater than the sum of it's parts. I.e. Clapton in Cream, very rarely are they as good when they step outside of the band that made them famous.
However solo guitarists who join a band can often have better sounding albums. I.e. Joe Satriani I look be his solo stuff but I think Chickenfoot was a perfect outlet for him.

Richard Patrick, left NIN and formed the rather marvellous Filter

Wes Borland, from Limp Bizkit, his first album as Black Light Burns, called Cruel Melody is cracking

Martin Gore's solo stuff is good, but electronic, so not to everyone's taste

George Harrison's All Things Must Pass is amazing.

I also really enjoy Pete Townshend's 'All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes'.

  • Not sure that Marty Friedman counts, as he was a solo artist first, but the albums he made while he was in Megadeth (Scenes and Introduction) are great.

The first few Black Label Society albums while Zakk Wylde was still in Ozzy's band, too... back before Zakk became a caricature of himself
Too much gain... is just about enough \m/

Just listening to this Richie Sambora album now. Great recommendations in here

  • +1 for Richie Sambora.

Stranger in this Town is a tremendous album with some great players on it... Tony Levin is on bass for quite a bit of it and Eric Clapton is very much on form on "Mr Bluesman".

Could I be unusual and suggest Paul Simon?
I think if you allow Paul Simon in then the rest of the discussion becomes moot. He has no equal when it comes to song writing and each is a perfect performance.

Steve Morse. He produced world-class albums away from the D. Dregs. He's well-known indeedy; well, I'm of the opinion that he's still a tad underrated: Morse is a sublime musician, full of versatility and unbelievably talented.

Which prompts me to mention Pride & Glory, by far the best thing Zakk has ever done.

Yeah, I was always disappointed that we didn't get any more Pride & Glory albums.

Except I don't think many would say his solo work trumps Simon & Garfunkel?

That wasn't the brief, it was the best solo album by a guitarist from a band! He was definitely the guitarist in S&G, and had some absolutely brilliant solo albums as well

First one that springs to mind for me is Zack Wylde’s Pride & Glory album. Excellent collection of music and not a duffer among ‘em.

Mark Tremonti's solo stuff is far better than Creed.

Ooo I like Creed and I enjoy Alter bridge, but I don't think I've heard his solo stuff.

    Good thread btw
    Well worth checking out !!
