    Us.

It was okay some amusing moments and an interesting idea but doesn’t really go anywhere.

Really it’s just an old fashioned slasher movie with a modern spin.

Just found 'Heat' on Prime. Hadn't seen since 1990's. Masterful piece of film making.

    Diana.

I'm actually watching it at the moment but I don't know how much more I can stand.
Even Naomi Watts can't save this one.

The Taking of Tiger Mountain (2014) . I've never thought Tsui Hark was a particularly great director, but this was dire. Or at least, the first ten minutes was - I stopped watching after that. If done realistically, it could have been an interesting film, but the style was ridiculously overblown and, for 2014, completely hackneyed: how many more times do you want to see a slow motion shot of a bullet coming directly towards the camera, then jump cut to it going through someone with a balletic falling backwards of the body? When they introduced the character of the bandit boss being carried in on a palanquin and having a bird-of-prey that pecked prisoners to death, that told me everything I needed to know about where the film would be going & I cut the cord.

Not very good unlike Lost in Translation. Really rather boring

    Tenet.
What a load of stylistic self-indulgent clap trap.
It's not hard to follow or keep up with, it's just nonsense.  Nolan has taken an idea and turned it into a world with rules, but then really struggled to make a coherent story fit within those rules.  At times it's laughable.  I burst out laughing when they unboarded the helicopter/container and the car chases are like a comedy sketch.
Once you have this concept that time "travel" is a thing and everything that has happened or will happen has already happened because it all exists simultaneously, then there really is very little suspense, things feel forgone even if they attempt to make it feel like they aren't.

Those clichéd "anonymous" characters where everyone immediately knows who they are going to turn out to be...... Really quite tired.

Very disappointed, I expected it to be a challenge, but it's just really not very good!
Have a wis as its total shit. Big difference between clever and confusing crap

    Malcolm X

Spike Lee’s biopic with Denzel Washington.

Slightly too long at three and a quarter hours - some of the set-pieces in the early part in particular drag a bit - so I watched it in two halves, but a monumental piece of work. No great revelations, the story is told in a matter of fact way, but some very strong performances from the huge cast, and Washington probably hasn’t done anything better. Lee’s direction is sometimes too clichéd where it doesn’t need to be and is probably too eulogising of a complex man, but overall... still a great film and you probably shouldn’t wait as long as as I did to see it.

    9/10

"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski

  • Just worked my way through the sleepaway camp trilogy. This would be my 4th or 5th run-through and this time I would say sleepaway camp 3 teenage wasteland was the standout.

The Great Wall. Matt Damon as some kind of mercenary in early China.
i had no idea what the film was so apart from the excellent design that drawn me in the sudden plot twist hit me as hard as Dusk Til Dawn the last film I viewed so unprepared. Brilliant because I was surprised but overall probably just a 7/10.

Saw it at the cinema (in IMAX) when it came out. Visually very impressive, but that’s about it. I remember thinking at the time that it probably wouldn’t translate particularly well to a smaller screen.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

Drone, free on Prime. Sean Bean as a contractor for the CIA who remote-pilots drones. His American accent is a bit wobbly but on the other hand he doesn’t say bastid once. I thought I could see how it was going to pan out but there’s a neat little twist at the end. Overall, not bad.

    Calm With Horses On Netflix.

Very powerful Irish crime drama about an ex boxer who’s the muscle for some very undesirable rural gangsters.

Brilliant performances from the two main actors.

Dragon Inn (1967).  Still on my King Hu kick. This is a classic wuxia film in which bad guy imperial court eunuch wants to eliminate the children of a rival he has just had executed. The children are travelling to a place of exile with an escort of officers  so bad guy sends a team of agents to intercept and assassinate them. The action all happens at a remote inn in the mountains. If you are into early wuxia movies (ie.mid to late 1960s,  before most of the Shaw Brothers stuff) you'll like this The combat scenes aren't particularly realistic, but that's not the point here (in the same way that it wouldn't be the point in Chinese opera, for example). Like the other King Hu films in the Masters of Cinema series, this has been restored beautifully and looks amazing. Great stuff.

Neil Armstrong biopic/drama. Bloody loved it. Not sure how accurate it is in the portrayal but as a piece of film I absolutely loved it.

Thirst (2009) - a morality-tale take on the vampire genre by Park Chan-wook in his own inimitable style. (Also some elements drawn from Zola's novel Therese Raquin, itself brilliantly adapted by the BBC back in 1979 - a version worth seeking out if you haven't seen it.) Darkly funny, moving, thoughtful - this is a very good film and I strongly recommend it.
