I've been watching the hammer Dracula films in order, diminishing returns until The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires. Purest nonsense 8 out of 10.
I love Hammer movies and I love Dracula films, but to be heretical I've always found them a bit disappointing... To cast a guy like Christopher Lee, with so much screen presence and such a fantastic voice, then to have the character hardly feature and (almost) never speak... But the first one is great, especially the scene when Van Helsing runs along the table and tears down the curtains to let the daylight in.  What an ending.

I was having a bit of a conversation about film adaptations of sitcoms. This is something that Hammer specialised in and apparently much bigger earners for them than the horror ones. All three On The Busses films and the Love They Neighbour one - those are the real horrors!

Another thumbs up for "The island" on Netflix. Except for one thing, that bugs me with al lot of movies with car chases in. Why do American cars do such huge somersaults when they crash? Bloody stupid.
    Because Michael Bay

Yesterday I finally saw Hot Fuzz - bloody brilliant! We all laughed so much at the whole closing scenes.

Today We saw Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom. Not an oscar winner but an enjoyable romp. I have time for that sort of film if I'm in the mood.

Later today I watched Cypher. Another film that has been on my list for years. It's quite a slow burn but I thought that it was full of intrigue. A film of corporate espionage and an accountant who chooses to get mixed up in it but then find himself in too deep. Big thumbs up for me. I try not to guess the ending of a film, and I thought that this had a good one!

    Kong Skull Island.

    Netflix.

My review was going to be either
    a) shite
    or
    b) better than expected

but there was stuff about it that I liked and it romped along but a Kong movie should be scarey and have jeopardy and pathos and this was just a posh video game with some nice 70s music.

    Free Guy

    6.5/10

CGI-laden popcorn fodder movie, interesting concept done fine but not amazingly. the plot is a bit of a mis-mash in that the lead character's motivation isn't clear - one minute it's one thing, then it's something else, then it's something else...  A generous person could say that shows a deep and complex main character and story arc, but it feels more like too many competing ideas.  A lot of cameos from youtube/twitch personalities - will entertain young people who like that sort of thing. Taika Waititi as the 'villain' is a bit too cartoonish but the writing of his character's as a liar, cheat, thief and his willingness to do anything to cover up shady shit is bang on as a video game company CEO.

    The Devil Rides Out

    Greatest movie ever made
A mate and myself went to see it at the cinema when it was released. Think it was an X and we lied about how old we were to get in. I remember it scared the crap out of me, especially the skeleton knight. I watched it again recently, sad to say it looked really dated. I like a lot of the 60s Hammer and Amicus films though, especially the Vincent Price ones… my absolute favourite is the Pit and the Pendulum.

Wouldn't go quite that far myself :) but it is a fun film. Charles Gray was great casting: one of the best evil sneers going.

Not that it would necessarily affect your enjoyment one way or another, but StudioCanal tinkered with some of the FX sequences on recent digital versions of The Devil Rides Out - I don't know which version might end up on TV nowadays.  Depends on the channel I suppose.

Sound of Metal, on Prime. Quite a thought provoking film. I’ve already got quite severe tinnitus in one ear and the thought of losing my hearing completely is quite scary, so this was an interesting insight. I thought it dragged a bit and it really didn’t grab me. Cool motorhome though.

    Maverick

Old, kinda lame but at the same time really good entertainment and quite funny.

Seen it loads of times but it’s easy watching.

Based on some reviews on here, I binged-watched Fear Street 1-3 last night while Mrs Offset was pouring pints. 1 & 2 very enjoyable, 3 slow and off the pace.  1 & 2 - 7/10.  3 - 5/10.

In 2001 I met Christopher Lee at the A and E I worked at.  He was unbelievably cool.  I got him to autograph my DVD he said it was one of his favourite movies he'd made.  Massive presence about him

Bill Nighy, Rachel Weisz, Michael Gambon, Ralph Fiennes and others in a spy thriller. Except that it isn't... it's really dull and a waste of the considerable acting talents of its stars.

  • Dave made a maze on Amazon prime, good fun low budget film. Amazing props and sets and tons of ideas,.............but it probably should have been a short film.
    Still worth checking out

Bad Samaritan on Prime. David Tenant in a twisty psychothriller with loads of tension. Well acted, decent plot and rather good all round, recommended.

    Naked Gun 2 1/2

Lesley Nielsen doing what only Lesley Nielsen can.  Hilarious slapstick cartoon-like comedy.

Perfect for seeing out a Sunday evening.
