Yeah, but @ICBM no one cares as long as the shareholders get paid seemingly. Apparently we're more than happy to pay that for shit prices and shit service.

(P.s. I am being slightly sarcastic, but I don't agree with utilities being run this way)

A revealing line in this mornings Sunday Times about the volatility of the energy market / impact on smaller energy companies & consumers. Gas storage can help to dampen dramatic shifts in price. Germany has 8 weeks worth of storage, Italy has 11, France has 14 ,whilst the UK has 4 days.... what have we been doing with our strategic energy planning over past 30 years??

We’ve decommissioned and dismantled most of our gas storage facilities for some time.

But, come on, it’s a typically British thing to do, placing ourselves at the mercy of foreign powers for our energy needs.

Not doing it, because it doesn’t benefit shareholders. Closing down and selling off storage capacity because it doesn’t benefit shareholders. Not investing in anything that doesn’t benefit shareholders.

    Welcome to free market capitalism.

  • Just been contacted to say Octopus is the new supplier for Avro, and not to cancel the DD.

    ^  Yes, me too.
Could be worse I reckon, but I'm a little pissed off at missing out on the chance of leaving the appointed company (was expecting British Gas, Scottish Power etc) & then getting £50 off from a relative's invitation to join Octopus  :#

Same here, Octopus are taking over.  Wouldn't it be ironic if Octopus now goes tits up.

It would never have crossed my mind...... but now that you've mentioned it, it's about the only thing I do want to do!

Looks like OFGEM did a job lot of divvying up / reallocating based on existing supplier. Apart from us AVRO to Octopus chaps, a couple of my mates with Peoples Energy are now with British Gas.

I tried to only heat one room of the house or put jumpers on etc and saved money, but I also found that a lot of mould started growing in less used areas of the house etc and I was told that you need to heat the whole house to avoid that.

I agree that this can be a difficult thing to achieve in typical old UK housing stock where insulation is way short of where it needs to be. If you don't heat the whole house for an extended period of time, condensation will form which will contribute to mould. Furthermore, if you let the majority of the house reach low temperatures, it can take many hours of wasted heat in dissipating the condensation (specific latent heat of evaporation I think is the term) by this I mean your heating is working hard but the room doesn't feel much warmer until the condensation has dissipated. This isn't an issue with well designed / insulated houses but certainly is for a large percentage of UK housing stock.

Just went to get a 15 kg Calor gas bottle refill & was told I was lucky to be getting one as they were having trouble getting deliveries & the prices were going up next week.
Regardless of the multiple causes, we really do seem to be living through a perfect shitstorm of fuel/energy/food, price hikes & shortages.

Agreed - I really think that things are going to get rather unpleasant with respect to cost of living, lasting quite possibly for the next 2 - 3  years.

I just renewed my Avro tariff two weeks ago... :(
I was just about to move from Igloo to Avro then I saw the news last night. DD was due to come out on the 26th - this will be cancelled asap. I have emailed (you can't call them  :s ) Igloo to cancel my move to Avro. I wonder if Avro would still try to take my first up front payment if I do not cancel my DD. I am not taking that risk. Frickin pain in the arse all this stuff!
Looks like I will be moving from Igloo after all ... Think this year's going to be an expensive one  :o

  • Just been contacted by Octopus with a link to provide meter readings, and found enough of the Avro site was still working to see my balance.
