I Win . Waiting for a Star to fall  is sheer class  even the mockery of a TOTP2 presenter takes nothing away from it  & Shannon looks so 80s girl next door cute

    YES. Phenomenal song.

And Wikipedia tells me they also wrote How Will I Know? and I Wanna Dance with Somebody for Whitney. What a CV!!

I can recall this coming out - I was about 14 - The band The Rubettes never existed at the time - The high vocals were done by a session singer called Paul Da Vinci - The song was about to chart so the 'demo/session' guys quickly became The Rubettes minus Paul and formed just in time to go on TOTP - Showaddywaddy were offered the song and turned it down
Those sort of faux teddy boy bands were pretty much my first awareness of pop music via TOTP. My favourites were Mud. I think Tiger Feet is still a classic (with quite buzz saw fuzz guitar as I think I recall).
yes I was somewhat of a fan of Mud - Rob Davis co wrote Kylie's big hit Can't get you out of my head - with Cathy Dennis

Rock - any music a person can bang their head too
Metal - as above but with longer hair and smellier clothes
Grunge - as above but even longer hair and even smellier clothes
Alternative - any music where a person can just stand still, shuffle a bit, and look like Kevin from Kevin and Perry
Brit Pop - part rock/part pop/part Tony Blair/part Spice Girls
Europop - terrible, cheesy, cringy, corny stuff our weird Euro neighbours seem to like.
    Punk - it's Punk
New Wave - it's not Punk, but nearly is
Ska - dance music for skinheads in braces
Mod - dance music that's like rock music but pretends not to be. Status Quo and The Who got confused with this one.
Rap - an obvious typo missing the C off the start.
Hip-Hop - for people who like crap, want to be gangsters, and like lyrics sung so fast they sound like just one word.
House - for people who like drugs, made by people on drugs and produced by people on drugs
Soul - swingy, finger-clicking, sway music loved by black people.
Swing - like Soul but for white people in tuxedo's.

Pop - any other stuff that doesn't fit into the above

  • Having given it some thought I think this is probably my favourite pop song that was released in my lifetime despite having had 32 years to pick another:

I'll get a round to buying a 'real' guitar one day.

As a lover of a nice pop hook, I'm scouring this thread.

I would consider Billie Jean to be a perfect pop song, but my vote goes for this earworm.

Great guitar solo but that video, with the bloke with the Strat behaving like the biggest twat to ever step in front of a camera, is too big a hurdle to clear.

I'll add The Beatles' "Help" to the list.

I actually love the updated version. It's a banger.

The vocal harmonies in this version are probably some of my favourite of all time.

That magnificently powerful piece of film making from the 'Comic Strip Presents' featured in the Robbie Coltrane tribute thread next door reminds me that this surely must be a contender.

    Seriously?
The Rubettes, Sugar Baby Love is pretty much my favourite example too.  Even down to the speaking part.
