    Slightly scary morning...

Went for 3 mile jog at gentle pace with my wife but suffered bad hives attack en route. Managed to get back home and take allergy tablet but then started feeling very faint and dizzy.  Then passed out unconscious in the shower.  Thank heavens for lovely wife.

Second allergy tablet is now reducing the hives but feeling rather wobbly...

I suspect that the beetroot powder I've just started taking has, combined with my normal blood pressure meds,  lowered my blood pressure too much and hence white out after even modest exertion...

    Not a nice sensation!

Did a local 10k today. Only my 2nd 10k in 3 years as been doing longer stuff and triathlons etc. it’s famously tough as the first 3 miles are uphill. Brutal start. I was breathing out of my ass! Thank goodness for the downhill sections. Anyway delighted to get round in 40 mins 47 seconds.
I would think say I enjoyed it as it was really tough but felt great once I crossed the finish line.
well done to everyone else with their running exploits. Keep up the amazing work.

Wow, that is a cracking time (and all the more so with the uphill) - well done!

Aw cheers guys.  @Bidley , don't feel bad , it's entirely possible it may be unconnected and what I had was 'simply' an anaphylaxis reaction to a bad hives attack causing me to pass out.

Will be curious to see what GP says and who knows I may be able to come off some high blood pressure meds if beet powder is significantly lowering my BP... :)

  • Keeping fingers crossed for you @Benm39 - hope you get to the bottom of it and feel better soon.

Cheers,  waiting on GP appointment but initial nurse response to my e consult confirms beet supplement as lowering systolic bp and therefore put me at greater risk from fainting following the unrelated hives attack... so it's another confirmation of the power of the humble beetroot at least :)

Had some free time yesterday so I went for my first outdoor run since doing C25K on the treadmill. Jesus Christ am I aching today! I wasn't prepared for how different running over mixed terrain is for muscles you probably don't use on the treadmill. I've been slacking a bit this year and just doing the odd HIIT peloton video, but managed half an hour without any walking breaks so I'll take that :)

  • Active day for me yesterday - I cycled to work (4.3 miles), short walk at lunch time, then a fast cycle home. My wife then wanted to go for a run together in the dark, and she pushed her recent distance PB from 1 mile to 2.5 miles. It was a good test of my knee which I injured slightly by over-crouching to get under a fallen tree on holiday! No pain, but my knee just grinds a bit like bone on bone. I think it's recovering.

Big thing today is that I'm getting a pedicure later! Well, a footcare treatment including the removal of my painful corn hopefully. Will be interesting to see if I can walk/run/drive/cycle soon after.

I'm entering the Sandringham 24 hour event in August, with 2 mates. They're far more hardcore than me, so it'll be a no-sleeping and 90-120 minutes rest between 10k laps. That's what I'll focus my training on.

  • So, went to the foot clinic and they tell me I've got a verruca! They used a scalpel to trim it down and get rid of excess hard skin, then it started to bleed (normal) and then put some silver stuff on it then zinc oxide tape. Weird how such a little trim back felt so much different. It isn't gone yet, it needs to die rather than be cut out. One option is cryogenic treatment, or I can keep using zinc oxide to see if that works. Fun times.

I'm probably more comfortable now than I was so I'll keep running for now, once its healed.

Hope alls well with you @Benm39 - hang tough.

30K for me this morning - Teddington Lock to Vauxhall. Nice steady pace at 5:44 per km.

Rock and roll landmarks passed on the way:

    Teddington ITV studio site
    Eel Pie Island
    Ron Wood’s house (Wick House)
    Richmond cemetery (Keith Relf)
The Bull’s Head jazz pub in Barnes
Marc Bolan’s crash site (almost - went past the bottom of the road)
The Sex Pistols house at Gunter Grove
Keef, Mick and Brian Jones’s house in Edith Grove
    Battersea Power Station

  • Just done w6d2 of c25k.

Got to the end of the first 10min run and was feeling pretty good so kept going.  Managed to run straight through the 3min walk break, the next 10min run, the 5min cool down and another 7 minutes after that.  So 35 minutes running in total and I managed my first 5k since restarting.  That's longer than the final run of the c25k schedule so I think I've technically finished the program.  I'm going to keep it up though as my runs are still very variable (I found the previous run to this very difficult).

So, after this do I keep running 5ks to build up stamina and speed for that or am I better launching straight into a 10k training program and start working towards that?

You'll likely find the bridge to 10k more rewarding rather than just repeating 5k distance... it leads to longer things though (but which is great actually!) .

Congrats on finishing the 5k programme and in fine style by sound of it.

  • Cheers.  I was leaning towards going straight to 10k training.

I've three weeks left of c25k so I'll finish it properly (though I'll do longer runs if I feel up to it) before moving on.

  • Accompanied my wife on park run today. She wants to do a Half Marathon later in the year (GER) but hadn't done more than 1 mile until this week. Tuesday we did 2.5 miles and today she got round the 5k (3.1 mile) route in 31:11. Not fussed about time, she's just pleased she didn't stop running. She enjoyed it. The weather was great and we have good scenery on our local one.

    Great work everyone.

I've been off work all week with fucking COVID (I only did a test because I was supposed to have a CT scan today). Hopefully I don't miss a full week of training. The missed-training-anxiety is real.

Ah bugger. Don’t worry about missing a week or even two - I’ve done it on both my marathon training due to injury. It won’t hurt at all, main thing is hopefully you don’t get any troubles from Covid that affects your running. Fingers crossed.

Thanks @Iamnobody - you've no idea how much I need to hear that :)

I actually feel fine chest-wise. I had a cough and a sore throat for a couple of days but now I'm just tired all the time. I'm itching to get out again. I had 20 miles planned for Saturday but that might have to wait.

  • Hope you recover soon Bidley.  I've had COVID twice now but don't seem to have suffered any long term effects.

Still plugging away at c25k despite having managed a 5k run last week.  Yesterday's run was just 25 minutes and I was wiped out by the end.  I've not idea where I got the energy for the extra 12 minutes I needed for the 5k.
