Sally Cinnamon was an excellent call.

    I'll add April Skies.

    And Can't Be Sure.

Some great songs have been mentioned.

The Beach Boys produced some good music too.

'Life is very short, and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend' - Lennon & McCartney (We can work it out).

    Dua Lips - Physical.

    Absolute banger.

    I love Dua she's great.

Her Future Nostalgia album is head and shoulders above most "pure pop" of recent years.

    Plus she's smoking hot.

Edwyn Collins - A Girl Like You

There's a great live version with the legendary Bernard Butler nailing and making the lead parts his own as only he can.

Loads of options, especially 80’s the pop music hay day. But for me, I think this is one of the most perfectly crafted pop songs ever written, doesn’t have to be the most popular.

In more recent time, I like Taylor Swift (how can you not with young kids around), but even by her standards, I think Anti Hero is instant classic.

I've liked some the Dua Lipa and Bruno Mars' songs but I think Crowded House's 'Distant Sun', Squeeze's 'Another Nail in my Heart' and 'Tempted' but my favourite ones are more obscure, like 'New Mistake by Jellyfish and 'I don't mind at all' by Bourgeois Tagg

What makes a pop song perfect?

Does it matter in this thread anyway?

    More like...
    Songs you like,
Songs that you think make you look cool/have a vast musical knowledge,
Songs sung by girls you think are hot.

    The Spinners - Rubberband Man

I’m so bored I might as well be listening to Pink Floyd

This.  Textbook pop song structure, instantly identifiable intro, fantastic melody, and a cracking guitar solo to boot.

Hit me with your rhythm stick - Ian Dury and the Blockheads

    Step On - Happy Mondays

The bulk of things mentioned on this thread would also do nicely.

  • Taylor Swift is amazing.  I recently listened to a podcast considereing if she is one of our greatest living poets.  She is up there with Wordsworth
I like Taylor Swift and respect her songwriting but she really isn't a poet on a par with Wordsworth. Do you think the following is up there with, say, Intimations of Immortality?

    "Cherry lips, crystal skies
I could show you incredible things
    Stolen kisses, pretty lies
You're the King, baby, I'm your Queen"

Be My Baby - The Ronettes.
Be My Baby is usually considered the greatest pop song of all time and I wouldn't argue against that. However, I do think some of this acclaim is because of Brian Wilson's well known obsession with the song rather than judging the song entirely on its own merits.

I always used to say Mr Blue Sky and Wild West Hero by ELO.

But I heard the former quite recently and for the first time I thought it's beginning to sound a bit dated.  Still great though.
