The ten greatest drummers of all time

What's Hot

That musical authority the New Zealand Herald has published its top 10 drummers list.

http://m.nzherald.co.nz/entertainment/news/article.cfm?c_id=1501119&objectid=11340096

The first thing that will surprise you is it's not a bad list. The second thing that will surprise you is, being a NZ publication, Jonah Lomu and Richie McCaw didn't make the top ten.

Surprisingly all white dummers, and a couple of notable omissions, Gadd being the obvious one.

However, when it comes to lists like this, one man is constantly overlooked and it irks me; a man that played on 2 of the greatest albums ever recorded (and best selling) was the musical director of 4 tours to Michael Jackson and who Madonna believes is the best of them all:

Jonathan 'Sugarfoot' Moffatt.

He has nailed down the grooves to some of the most recognised songs (no, THE most recognised songs) in the history of music. He was MJ's Musical Director. He was Madge's Musical Director. His visual style was amazing and he was the absolute master of the choke.

His contributions are the equal of any mentioned so far and I'm astonished that people forget this genius existed.

I agree re Bonham and Copeland.

Leftfield ones would include Dennis Davies, Steve Jordan, Tomas Lang (incredible), Abe Laboriel Jr..... or anyone who has played with Stink.

Dennis Chambers - saw him a couple of times in the mid/late 80s with Mike Stern and John Scofield bands - never seen anything like it.

Had to google him but yeah recall Jane's Addiction well.

All great bands have a great drummer. One of my faves was Clem Burke.

Surprised that being a down under publication they didn't think of Jon Farriss from INXS. Him and Gary Beers are one of THE great rock n roll rhythm sections.

But yeah, Bonham. Force of nature that bloke.

Who else? The bloke out of U2. Him and the Edge are the proper musicians in that band. Should have got shot of the other two and made ambient experimental music.

Tony Williams, first gig with Miles Davis but diversified a lot later on. That's him beating the living shit out of the skins on PIL's Rise.

Vinnie Coiletta or whatever his name is, the one who played with Jeff Beck a few years back. Saw him with Beck and my God that bloke is a fabulous mix of power and finesse.

    Reni out of the Roses.

    Charlie Watts.

    Bill Ward  out of Sabbath.

    Elvin Jones.

    Philly Joe Jones.

The bloke who plays for the Manics.

The bloke who drums for 'Tool' should be on the list.

  • Al Jackson is missing from that list. Think of the clockwork timing that is any Stax record.

+1. Coincidently I'm listening to 'Undertow' at the moment. Can't argue with Neil Peart being close to the top but no Matt Cameron?

    Billy Cobham, great shout.

Miles Davis's Tribute to Jack Johnson has some monster drumming by Cobham, and it was the first time he and John McGlaughlin played together.

    Cozy Powell.

    Ian Paice.
