Well, I looked at some of the results on the BBC news and the estimates were ridiculously low (eg. estimate £10-15k, sold for $592k); I can't imagine any data resuting from them being remotely useful to anybody.
    Exactly

That is my whole point about them no longer having a purpose as a guitar - And then how do you measure the desirability of one big guitar hero over and other and the relevant demand and prices
I'm sure somebody has tinkered with models that look at record and ticket sales in various currencies at various points in time and can spit out sample price ranges based on demographics and so on. But it's probably easier to start the bidding at eBay prices and let the market sort the rest. As an aside, a friend of a friend spent some months researching the selection and pricing of this lot, with MK. But was young enough to be oblivious to the significance and considered it just another job.

I read this morning that another auction is coming up soon, and included is Marty McFly's Hondo Chiquita, expected to reach $200k. I did some googling, it seems Dusty Hill had one of those too and it sold for $5-6k or so. Meanwhile, Reverb has or had one for $500. I wouldn't half that for a Hondo anything but each to their own.
The estimate is not the auction house's prediction of the price realised at the auction. The estimate is a marketing tool, designed to encourage bidding. It is a range, slightly above the minimum price the client will accept (the reserve). Estimates are set by the auction house's specialists in negotiation with the client. The specialists know the market. They also know high estimates will suffocate the auction, deterring potential bidders from attending. So they persuade the client to keep the estimate low.

Eve, who was shadowing Knopfler’s guitar tech Pete Brewis at the time, has cleared up the garbled mythology of the ‘Money For Nothing’ amp set-up for us: Mark recorded the Les Paul through a Marshall JTM 45 amplifier head, which belonged to Eve at the time and has since passed into Mark’s collection (see footnote to lot 40), and a Laney 4 x 12 speaker cabinet that belonged to AIR Studios. Minus the wah-wah, the same set up would be used to record ‘Brothers In Arms’.
Contrary to popular belief, it is perfectly possible to coax that sound out of a JTM45 head. But you have to strangle the volume knob.

If I were in such a position, could be tempted to have a bit of fun with the company chequebook and give the accountants a bit of a challenge while I was at it :)

Any accountant who's worked in a place run by a racing / rallying wannabe should be well able for it.
That sounds like it's from someone in the know.. :)

Nice wee video from Mary Spender on the guitars, actually managed to wangle a noodle on the icons of the collection.

Can't believe they let all these click bait nobodies play these iconic guitars. No wonder Patrick didn't pay so much for them.

Especially as she's literally using them to generate herself revenue and they didn't let any Tom Dick plug them in and play them, I hope they charged her for the privilege. If they did, I have no problem with it. If they didn't then yeh its clearly about 'who you are'.

Of course it's about who you are, and she's a YouTuber with over 700k subscribers. Not only is that worth quite a lot in the modern world, it's practically the entire game.

It surprises me that so many people still don't get that.

OK...so because somebody has more, it's worth nothing?

That's kind of dumb, but if you really want to go down that road...those are channels from entirely different segments with dramatically different viewership figures. The economics also don't really compare, because that Nico channel only puts out shorts, which is extremely limited in terms of both revenue and attention by comparison to someone putting out long-form videos regularly with a strong fanbase who are orders of magnitude more likely to spend a lot more time watching (which is far more valuable to advertisers and sponsors).

For a less brain-dead comparison, take a look at UK guitar channels. Oh, look...she's got more or less the same number of subscribers as Rob Chapman, and she's not far behind Andertons, and twice as many as Rabea. Love them or hate them (I'm guessing you hate them), they're still the yardstick for UK-based creators in the guitar space.

Oh, and all of them are earning a significant living from doing it.

That's the game. To everyone who's not stuck pining for the 1980s, whether they're fans of hers or not (I'm in the "not" category, for what it's worth) she's actually somebody with name-recognition where it matters, and that opens doors.

Genuine question. Care to share any knowledge on what the ‘significant living’ might be? £50k? £100k More? Just interested what the order of magnitude might be here…..Edit fwiw, I am generally ‘for’ these content creators because I can watch guitar orientated stuff and avoid shit tv!

Micro accounts are pretty meaningless on Companies house. Significant? Likely not.  I'd say its damn hard work continually trying to make up content, that is why after a while they have to resort to clickbait and name checking titles to catches some clicks, I don't envy them a bit, its a desperate battle to keep Youtube happy. You guys can call it a game but there are much easier ways to make six figures and preserve your mental health.

Well, it all depends on the creator themselves. I briefly saw Rob's YouTube revenue statement when I was at his house maaaaaany years ago, back when he had around 70k subscribers, and I remember thinking it was a a fair bit north of what I was earning at the time. That's probably about 12 years ago now.

Yes, that's vague, but they're not my numbers to give. All I'll say is that I was earning somewhere between £30k and £40k at the time.

They'd be fixed assets, not current assets, unless she has a trade selling guitars.
