Great one, I forgot about the real oldies.

Nature Boy by Nat King Cole is another one.

In the same vein - Love me Tender….Elvis (I also like the Mick Ronson version though have to admit the vocals aren’t as good).

I will always love you - Dolly's original - NOT the belter-fest that Whitney Houston did.

Old, overweight and badly maintained. Unlike my amps which are just old and overweight.

But is that really a ballad?  “Coat of Many Colors” (my grandma’s favorite song) is a proper ballad — it tells a story.

Also a proper ballad: “Country Death Song” by Violent Femmes.  Far from my favorite, but I’m just proud of myself for having just learned what “ballad” actually means thanks to this thread.

Appears to be a protest ballad, yeah.  Just going by Wikipedia and the Poetry Foundation.  But being so far removed from folk times, our pop ballads aren’t really passed down orally.

I don’t really know what I’m talking about.  I just always assumed that “ballad” basically meant “love song” because of the so-called “monster ballads” that 80s hair bands were said to sing.

But if this doesn't fall under the category of 'Ballad', then it would have to be Scarborough fair by Simon and Garfunkel.

The definition I found was essentially "song that's a sad story". So New Halloween.

I am terrible at these kind of questions as I always suffer from recency bias, but regardless of that, do murder ballads count?

Failing that my favourite version of my favourite Dylan song:

    "Filthy appalachian goblin."
