I came here to say exactly that.  Wearing my Cardiacs shirt as I type.

I'm reading the responses and I think most of them pretty much gave what they had to give.
Yep - I'm really after those whose output (EDIT - you consider) was cut cruelly short.

    Robert Leroy Johnson.
There are others, but I forget their names and it would take me too long to type it on this newfangled screen thing - excuse me, what was that you were saying? ...Oh,  OK nurse .... time for my medication and afternoon nap. Cheerio.

This is exactly the point. This is why I mentioned Buddy Holly (who had barely even scratched the surface of his genius) and Glenn Miller, but not Hendrix. Not that Jimi would not have done a good deal more important work, but he had already given so much.

Most of the 27 club would probably be on my list and very much Adam Schlesinger (Fountains Of Wayne).

Then there is the list of people much missed but who might not have added much to the amazing catalog they left behind. Gil Scott Heron, Freddie etc…….

As for "when am I ready?"  You'll never be ready.  It works in reverse, you become ready by doing it.  - pmbomb

Randy Rhoads. Was around when I was young but had passed by the time I was lucky enough to hear him for the first time.

Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, Randy Rhoads, SRV, Frank Zappa, Edward Van Halen, Cliff Burton, Dimebag, Leslie West, Eric Wagner, Gary Moore, Gary Thain, David Byron (actually most of the original/classic members of Uriah Heep), Malcolm Young, James Dewar, Paul Kossoff, Roy Buchanan, Nick Drake, Dan Hartman, Jimi Hendrix(!)... there are so many.

I don't necessarily miss what they would have gone on to do, because many of those were well past their creative peak.  Some might have done interesting things if they'd defeated their personal demons.  Either way, it's a shame they're not around any more.

Also thinking of people who are still around, but can no longer play - like Jason Becker - or simply withdrew from the music business and never came back - like Vito Bratta.

I’d interpret this as artists who died during my lifetime who, if they had lived, would have a lot more to deliver musically.  Kurt Cobain’s an obvious example - he’d a lot more in him than three albums and an MTV Unplugged session.

At the other end of the scale - I mourn the loss of Peter Green, but to be frank he’d delivered everything for which he’ll be remembered by 1970 and was a shadow of his former self when he returned to action.

    With that in mind:
    Kurt Cobain
    Freddie Mercury
    Chris Cornell
    Dimebag Darrell
    Rory Gallagher
    Prince

I was 6 months old when Hendrix died - so it would have to be him.
