  • Speed King, by Deep Purple from In Rock.

Debut of the band (in any true sense), with a huge wall of noise and studio humping, followed by a morph into delicacy and decent as a tease into the song.

A true statement of intent and first in every way.

If we're including "breakthrough albums" that aren't technically debut albums - and also including solo artists! - I'd have to say...

    David Bowie - Space Oddity

    Don McLean - American Pie

Meat Loaf - Bat Out Of Hell

Eurythmics - Love Is A Stranger

Cyndi Lauper - Money Changes Everything

    No Doubt - Spiderwebs

    Evanescence - Going Under

I'd also have to include Cascada - Everytime We Touch :). I know it's total cheese but I love that song and it's a great introduction to the band, if you like that kind of thing ;).

"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski

"Only two things are infinite - the universe, and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the universe." - Albert Einstein

Since about 1982 or 1983. I was probably the first boy in my school to like Duran Duran :).

(Which coincidentally made me much more popular with girls ;).)

I almost mentioned Duran Duran in this thread, but the first track on their first album is Girls On Film, which - great though it is - is not as good as Planet Earth, which is the second track.

    "Planet Earth" is brilliant.

As is "To Cut a Long Story Short", which - a bit of research has just shown me -  was the first track on Spandau Ballet's first album.  Shame it was all downhill after that.

The first couple of Spandau albums are great, but the pop stuff is still brilliant IMO.
