Work Christmas Do's

What's Hot
lloydlloyd Frets: 5774
Who's going on one this year? Where you going? Do you enjoy this kind of thing?

Mines on Thursday at a nice hotel next to my office. There will be a buffet and an extremely limited amount of free booze. I work with a bunch of nice but dull people, so I'll be showing my face, eating some food having a glass of wine or two then ducking out the back door to meet some mates to go for a couple of beers with them.

Generally I'm not a big fan of socialising outside of work hours but it really depends on the team of people you work with I guess.

Thursday as well, at our office. We're gonna have a shit ton of pizza, beer, music and computer games. Our bosses will inevitably leave early, leaving the rest of us to get absolutely shitfaced and come in in the late afternoon on the Friday.

I could handle something like that and possibly enjoy it @Drew_fx

@JAYJO there's no-one remotely bangable in the office (and I'm not single-not that that stops a lot of people at the Xmas do!)

Saturday at the posh (?) hotel in Cambridge.

Beer, food (I won't be eating, so more beer) and extra alcomohol.

I feel a very quiet sunday is coming

never did like the whole "work hard and play hard" ethos, where the line between work and pleasure blurs, just not my thing.

  • We had a whole company party a couple of weeks back at the lovely One Marylebone building in London, theme was The Great Gatsby. Everybody dressed up 20s style, we had flapper girls, trapeze artists, and a brilliant jazz band. Oh and a lot of free wine

I get on very well with my work people, and we love the chance to see each other out of the office. People are often more free outside of spreadsheets, property inspections and such so you might find your nice but dull bunch may surprise you in party mode
Please note my communication is not very good, so please be patient with me

See most of the people I work with I'm happy to have a drink (or 8) with, there's a couple who I'll avoid though.

  • I hate them. I love Christmas but hate the Christmas works do. I don't want to spend the evening trying to make small talk with people I don't really like eating crap food from a Harvester. I used to work for a company that put on amazing parties. Still didn't enjoy them.

fing is, I'm not a massively social person (I know, shock horror etc.) so the whole work social thing is a bit of a source of stress to me. I'm happy enough to go to the pub and have a pint or two, but I just like my own company. When I work, it's for the money, if I didn't need the money I wouldn't be there.

I get this, and have worked with awesome people that are still mates now (usually from thee hospitality trade) and would finish work and socialise with them, meet up when not working with them etc.

I've worked with people that I've enjoyed doing the odd work night out with too-like you say people are a bit more open/themselves when the pressure of work's taken away.

Your party sounds fun (and free) which always helps!

  • Ours is this Thursday, sit down meal type thing then disco. This is for an engineering company where the workforce is predominantly male...and partners aren't invited.

I'll stay for the meal then toddle off home (I'm gigging on Friday and can't do two late nights in a row!)

Much the same as me then.

I have a few really close friends at work (as in completely trust), most are good for a laugh, but I wouldn't want to be out with them every month though.

This Saturday for a stupid black tie night at the races at Ascot. I'm desperately looking for a way out. I'm not really interested in drinking with people from work and avoiding drunk women away from their kids.

  • I work with my girlfriend and she loves them so it's mandatory that I attend. I would much rather be sat at home with a nice Whisky and music. Or out gigging. I don't really like the majority of the people I work with. Most of them are nice and I get on with them but I wouldn't choose to be a part of the social circle outside of work.

  • Awful things! I'm very happy to have a few drinks with people from work who I enjoy the company of - but the company-organised enforced bonhomie is a truly dreadful experience.

I've not been to an office Christmas party for years and to be honest, not really that interested in going to one either. I don't think our company is having one this year (I work from home 95% of the time so I'm always out of the loop on this sort of stuff) and last year I was on holiday when they had a low key one.

To be honest, there's always someone who will embarrass themselves and ruin their prospects at said company and one thing I have always made sure of it's not me! Have seen some great career wreckers over the years.......

As my head office is a four hour drive away and my only visits there are to pick up a new car once every few years, I won't be attending - especially as they will charge me private mileage for the journey and I'll have to pay for a hotel.  Not to mention the fact that I only know most of them from their voices, so it would be surreal - talking to someone for a while before the penny drops that it's so-and-so that I've known for years etc.

Plus, with the exception of a small handful, most of them are hideous freaks with the personality of a wet cornflake packet.

The bigger danger by far though is my gob after a few beers.  I'd be likely to get shitfaced and tell the MD what I thought of him and his directionless control of the company, then try to get into his missus' underwear.  Either way, I'd end up fired - and still have to pay private milage.
