You sure you've got enough money? Max mass on 4E thrusters is 420T, but the max on 4C is 525T.

Had a quick go on the tutorial. I had to shoot so.easy waste canisters. I'm calling for it an honourable draw but I will persevere.

I've been having a look at the Roguey trade helper site.

I actually fancy doing a bit of trade grinding. Won't be very profitable with a small hold but I fancy just flying about for a bit, taking the odd mission when I feel like it.

I’m so bored I might as well be listening to Pink Floyd

You can actually make a fair bit of money with a small hold, trading rare commodities. Grab yourself a fuel scoop in the size-3 slot, 4A  shields, a bunch of cargo racks and you're set with 26T of space. That's easily enough for rares trading. I was making around 700k per run that way back at the beginning, with a Cobra - made my first 10 million that way (it's how I got my Vulture).

The best run is between the Lave/Leesti area (3 or 4 systems around there with rares) and Witchhaul, I think. You have to get an average of about 180Ly away before rares are worth their optimum, but you basically buy stuff at around 600CR - 1200CR and sell at around 18kCR.

So I believe the update is happening now.

When the servers are back up am I expecting to need to download a load more stuff for hours?

Depends on your connection. Usually takes me about 20 minutes to do a full update, on 76Mbit/s fibre.

    I'm updating mine now.

I see on the EDC that some are complaining that their fully loaded Vultures are getting blown away by NPC ships with 1 or 2 shots.

I can't imagine many new players sticking around with just a Sidewinder if that is the case.

I haven't seen any combat yet - I made 18 jumps to get to an Engineer, only to discover that the requirement to unlock is something that was only sold 400Ly away...a 72-jump round-trip.

Then I discover that the commodity in question has disappeared from the game entirely. Having checked on the forums, I'm not the only one that's found this. Essentially, Elvira Martuuk and Felicity Farseer are completely inaccessible as Engineers, because the stuff they require to unlock doesn't appear to exist.

I switched it off at that point...

AI is getting rebalanced again, and bug fixes.

Some of the Triple Elite guys in the EDC are complaining about 'pussies' and 'nerfing' - which is dead easy if you have a billion in the bank and a virtually indestructible ship.

Balanced doesn't have to mean nerfed at all.

What's the best way of working out a low combat risk trade route.

I've got 24T room in my viper and I'm doing some missions.

I've been doing short trade routes (1 jump) and getting about 1050cr profit per ton on gold and marine equipment etc, and data courier delivery missions for anywhere between 8000cr and 100,000cr

The missions pop up when available, but even with my small cargo space there must be something better than 1000 per ton profit that isn't too likely to get me blown to bits!

I'm somewhere near Evarate at the moment (can't remember exactly - but within 10ly)

I'd suggest mapping it out using http://inara.cz - loads of great stuff on there, and with it you can check the prices for various commodities in the local area.

Generally, though, you want to look for high-security systems (there'll naturally be less pirates that way).

My advice would be to A-rate your thrusters (and preferably distributor too) as soon as you possibly can, so you can just submit to interdictions and escape.

The other thing is...mass-lock only applies when you're trying to jump into supercruise. If you're mass-locked and on a definite loser, you can jump to another system, which bypasses the mass-lock from other ships.

The process for this - and it's one you should practice - is:

    1 - Interdiction
    2 - Target highest-priority hostile (there's a binding for this)
3 - Check to see if it's a ship bigger than you
4 - If it is, drop the throttle to zero and submit
    5 - Boost
6 - Go to left panel, first tab (possible destinations), go "up" from the top so you end up at the bottom of the list
7 - Select the first system you have enough fuel for
    8 - JUMPJUMPJUMP

If it's not a bigger ship than you at step 3, you can just keep boosting, get out of danger and go back to supercruise (thus not interrupting your journey).

The advantage of step 4 (rather than fighting the interdiction) is that your FSD comes back online much quicker than it does if you contest the interdiction and lose.

EDIT: Another tactic for avoiding being blown up, rather than boost away from the ship, is to boost in circles around your opponent while your FSD is charging. This is actually quite difficult to get the hang of (you need to keep one eye on the scanner to make sure you stay out of their firing cone), but it's very effective when you can't get away from them fast enough. It's kept me alive many times when I've been interdicted by wings of CMDRs in FDLs and BattleCondas. It looks incredibly flashy too, and always impresses your assailants into thinking you're a much better pilot than you actually are :D

    Thank you.

I'm still getting that mass issue when I try to upgrade the thrusters. I've got 1.1 mil in credits so I can afford an upgrade so I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

That Inara site looks good! I shall have a play with it.

Most odd. Are you absolutely sure you're going for the class 4 thrusters? That shouldn't be possible...I'd raise a ticket if you're trying to buy the right size and it just isn't working.

I'm probably taking a break from it for a few days. Logged in today to find that the Engineer commodities I spent days accumulating (probably about 20 hours of game time) have disappeared from my cargo hold overnight. Can't risk putting anything else in my hold until they look at it (I only have 6T of space, and it was full), and they don't seem to be processing tickets quicker than three or four days at the moment.

    Frustrating.

And a brief go on 1.6 tonight.
    Like the new mission screen.
Picket up a few bits and pieces whilst bounty hunting
Looks like I need to get Horizons to truely get into the Engineers game

If you can survive against the current NPCs, I'd wait a little while before jumping in with Engineers. I suspect that either we don't know enough about how/where the materials spawn, or FD need to tweak the distribution. Some things - which are needed for everything useful - practically don't exist in-game. It took me about 20 hours of game time to find Specialised Legacy Firmware, for example.
