I know it gets joked about a lot, but do you actually have to hide GAS purchases from the wife?

Unfortunately there's no space down the front of my trousers to for me sneak stuff past the wife.

Just go out and get that double-neck guitar you've always wanted, sneak it in that way, and she'll think you are really excited to see her and be looking forward to a *really* interesting exciting night...             :D

don't worry, you can thank me later...

She does keep wondering what she's gonna do with "her amp" though!
Lend to someone who can play. You for instance?

That was my first suggestion-she's more inclined to flipping it to make a few quid!

I think it stems partly from lots of couples having completely separate accounts. We keep separate bank accounts, but it all goes in a big joint budget so she can see exactly what I've spent anyway. I've never quite understood the logic of keeping everything completely separate when you're meant to be on the same team.
It seems to me like it's the other way round.

I know a pro guitarist in his 60s who still lives with his dad. He has a serious DVD collecting habit: he literally buys them every week. He smuggles them into the house so his old man doesn't notice. Genuinely very sad I think.

    This is sad.

Unless it's all porn, in which case completely understandable.

My wife and I have separate accounts and finances, but we both pay into a joint account for bills, mortgage, food shopping etc.

It's pointless trying to hide stuff from her cos she knows what I have and as she's a professional musician she is fully aware of prices.

But surely if you have joint finances the other half can see what's on the statement anyway, unless people have secret money as well as secret guitars?

I think for some people that is precisely what they do.

Me and the missus pay our bills, and the rest of the money is our own. She saves hers, I tend to spend it. I've calmed down quite a bit in recent times though, since agreeing to buy a flat. She's tried to pull the joint account thing, but I haven't agreed to do it.

She earns a bit less than me. I pick up the slack in a bunch of areas - if we go out, I'll most often buy the meal. But she'll cover the shopping most of the time, yet I cover bread and milk and basics because I tend to use more of them. She'll most often buy rice, because she eats it more than I do.

It's teamwork of a sort. But we don't really pool our resources and split them evenly, because the way we earned those resources was not even. I tend to disagree with the whole "everything is ours" dynamic that a lot of relationships have.

I've long thought that maybe there was a correlation between the number of guys on guitar forums who will admit to all sorts of deviousness to hide the value of gear from their wife and the number of guys on guitar forums who appear to be bitter divorcees.

I've always really, really hoped it was jokey bravado rather than a real thing to be honest. If I'm being really, brutally honest---If you regularly have to hide stuff from your wife I'd question why you married them.

Never mix business with pleasure is my moto. We have our own separate accounts but have standing orders to a joint acc that all the bills are paid from. I'd never give anybody joint access to my own account, oh no no no, not the mrs, not my mum, not the Pope. Nobody.

I can see what you're saying, and why you're saying it.

My parents have a joint account, which they both contribute to (Roughly even amounts) which pays for food, bills etc, but both have separate accounts for their own money.

My wife stopped full time work when we had kids (she now just works on Saturdays) so for us the vast majority of the family income is just my salary.

That was always the plan and fully agreed to by both of us as we want to raise our kids ourselves and not rely on (and have to pay for) childcare.

So me splashing out on a shiny new pedal can sometimes be a bit contentious as it is money coming out of the family budget.

  • Actually the worst aspect of the lovely Mrs RHC is that she often won't let me sell certain things (guitars especially) as she gets sentimental about them.

mrs f is pretty cool about me bringing new musical instruments into the house. Her attitude is it's his money, he can do what he wants with it. She's less cool with me bringing hookers into the house though.

My wife was the same. I'm now down to two guitars (from 7) - my Taylor GS Mini and my US Strat.

I sold my Custom Built Morgan Merlin, much to the distain of some on here who know what an incredible guitar it is. It's left handed and custom built, so the bloke who I sold it to got an absolute bargain, but I know it's going to get more use from him, as it's been sat in it's case for nearly 8 years not doing anything at my house.

My wife kept asking me if I was sure I wanted to sell it. Then said "I don't think you should sell it"...but I was happy to do so. We needed the money (still need money!) and it's getting more use in it's new home.

I've not been brave enough to tell Neil yet though. I'm sure he'll be disappointed.
