My mate had dreads in the 90s and was fighting the girls off with a shitty stick

Nowadays he has a Francis Rossi receding/ponytail combo and it look shite, zero luck with the gals too.

I, on the other hand have been cultivating the "Statham cut" for years and have had more girls than hot dinners.

One of the above sentences could be bullshit.

I'm in my 40s and have had waist length hair for years. Well, I say waist length, it is more tuck in jeans pocket length.
I always hated the feel of dreads in mosh pits in my youth.
The claim of cultural appropriation seems a little odd considering the evidence of Celts, Romans, Egyptians, Babylonian, Spartans etc supposedly all having them.

  • Think this sums it up from the Inbetweeners 2

Will McKenzie: Playing the guitar badly, wearing beads, talking about 'one love' and pretending you are friends with Central American villagers - who, by the way, despise you - before heading back to your parents five-bedroomed house in Surrey, doesn't make you a spiritual person, it makes you a bell-end.

    or

Will McKenzie: Oh, fuck off, Ben! You don't believe in 'song lines' any more than I do. It's just a way for you to seem interesting to girls because deep down you know you're boring and pretentious like your stupid fucking dreadlocks. Which, by the way, always look embarrassing on white people. They're not countercultural, they actually scream 'Oh, I've got a trust fund!' so get a normal haircut, you unbearable prick.

Pretty much sums it up for me Ha Ha

I have a white mate with dreads who's a really nice guy so in his case I just put it out of my mind, but my general reaction otherwise is similar to this...

  • Our double bass player has looooong dreadlocks and he is our sex mascot. He has been growing them for 21 years (he is 39) and frequently gets attention from women younger than that. He is also "ripped", which probably helps. :D

Meeting at white Rasta is a good way to put you off dreadlocks.

Normally when I see a white guy with dreads the first thing that springs to mind is soap dodger.

I expect him to be called swampy and be living in a new age community and hugging trees.

Basically, you need to Google "cultural appropriation".
This term encompasses stuff that makes good sense and stuff that doesn't (mainly certain vocal Twitter types having such baffling lack of imagination that they think hairstyles were invented in one place and one time by one culture.)

I think people don't like it, cos it looks shit.

Rastas have them as part of their whole culture/religious belief.

For me then, dreads on a non rasta is like a non sikh wearing a turban. Odd.

And I usually associate white people with dreads, with posh students called Guy, Tristram or Giles, who've gone "all whacky" now that they don't live (for a few months of the year), with mater & pater in Marlborough.

Yes, that's a bad stereotype, and judgemental I know.
