    Most of my guitars are vintage so they're all secondhand. The last couple of things I bought new were the Squier Bass VI and one of those Trohman Telecasters (£128 shipped). I hadn't seen any Bass VIs second hand and the tele was selling for less new so there wasn't much option there.

    If I was going to buy say a US Standard Strat I'd buy secondhand. You can save a fortune and as long as they're in good condition it really doesn't make any difference. Actually, I also bought a Baja Tele last year, it was under £300 secondhand in as-new condition. You really can't go wrong with that!!

    Hang on, I know this one. Hot and black? Ground up and in the freezer? No, she went of her own accord?

    I do prefer to buy new. Sometimes you could be waiting a long time to find used what you want.

    For me a large part of the fun is the chase - or just seeing what @jookychap buys knowing that it'll soon appear in the classifieds  ;)

    I almost always buy used, although if I get a good enough deal on something new that's a different matter.

    The exception is acoustics, which I tend to buy new

    I generally prefer new- assuming the same thing is currently available new, and assuming I think the new price is still reasonable.

    @impmann.
    Your 12 string shergold is the perfect example - I'd lusted after one for years, bought years then never really used it until finally it ended up back with you.
    As Jooky said I think there's a number of us that are spending the same fund a number of times over in the pursuit of……. well I'm not sure really……

    I prefer used, because they are relatively simple things and there isn't much to go wrong.
    I'd rather let someone else have the depreciation hit.

    Another reason for new is I can physically try them. If used that's not always an option.

    Happy with either, new or used, my experience is that I can never find what I want locally on the used market. I tend to be a bit impatient mind.

    I've bought both new and second hand recently. I bought the dgt second hand for £1500 (effectively £1000 after trading an American special against it). Given that the guitar was £2799 new, I think i got a bargain.

    And in January the Fender american standard with the solid rosewood neck which was brand new. I'd always said "I'll never buy a new strat that's lunacy".. But I tried one out and my strat hunt was over.

    I'd prefer to go second hand, but it really depends on the guitar. I was burnt by my tokai, paid £1300 for it brand new and the guitar is worth half that now. But I love the guitar and have no plans to sell it. Still pains me though, hey ho you win some you lose some.
    I would love to change my username, but I fully understand the T&C's (it was an old band nickname). So please feel free to call me Dave.
