I've used Lidl for years, never bought any food stuffs be it meat or veg/fruit that have been anything but spot on. And I'm a right picky cnt. Recently using Aldi too, no complaints thus far. And both offer great tools and such like. And Lidl Golden Sun bourbon, phwoar.

I've done this for so long as to offset my wife's habit of doing a full fucking shop at M&S. And I shudder when she hits a Waitrose. Over priced toss.

I won't mince my words Mr.OP. Aldi imo is the fucking worst shopping experience in the world. Shit product that looks like the name brand, tastes at bit like it, but ultimately isn't it. Stuff mixed up on shelves. Stuff on the floor. Fresh food that is sold so close its use by date that its rotten before you get home, meat that is 90% water. Tools and electronics of the worst quality imaginable. Check out staff who throw your stuff at you and give you dirty looks if you spend more than 3 seconds to pack your trolley. etc etc

The only thing its good for is beer and socks.

But you'll kid yourself that the beer is as good as your normal brew, but deep down you'll know it isn't.

I'll have to disagree. But I'll concede that if it's staffed by morons, and looks like a shit tip, I wouldn't go back meself.

Fortunately, the one I frequent in Newcastle isn't. But I will say i think Lidl is way and above Aldi.

But, each to their own. Makes life interesting.

(WTF am I getting into a debate about budget chains? Jesus).

I only go into our Aldi /Lidl for the special deals these days. Their tools are ok for the odd job and the motorbike gear they do occasionally is good value. Regular food shopping though? Feck that. The queues are always enormous because they only ever have one till open.

I expect that's going to be the story around my way, or at least initially anyway.
Hopefully when it dies down a bit it will be OK and the wife can go in the day so it should be alright.

By the time you get to the till, you've normally eaten everything in the basket.

some of the "german sausage" type things, are fun to get now and again,  and the 10001 piece socket set for £4.99....... but by and large its nasty

Watch out for the 50cl tall narrow bottles of German specialist desert wine (Beerenauslese or Trockenbeerenauslese) nearer to christmas. Pretty sure both Aldi and Lidl have 'em, at silly low prices and are great with the Christmas pud. These wines are £12-25  for a small bottle in your specialist wine shops but I think I paid £3.99 last time. I stocked up big time, still got some. Very nice indeed..

Before they started taking cards, their till throughput was phenomenal and even a very long queue was through in no time. And you get none of that 'are you OK packing your bags' bollocks.

My stock answer to that is along the lines of "Yes, I've been secretly practising in my bedroom and I can pack a mean plastic carrier".

one of em,  not sure if its Lidl or Aldi,  wont actually let you pack the shopping into bags,  you have to take it outside in the trolley and then pack  -  WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT ALL ABOUT

Yeah, thats both of them. It speeds up the checkout, just stick it all back in the trolley, move to the packing area and do it there. Simples.....

the one in "Thornbury' (south glosshire)  that me and mrs bert go to the most (not sure which spelling it is)  they do allow you to pack, but there is only a A4 sized piece of "counter top" to do so, and subsequently 3 1/2 mile queues

The one in Bradley Stoke (near the vets........hence why we sometimes pop in)  is 'no packing at check out'

Im not sure which one is which........... Lidl. Aldi  or what

Necrobump as I went to our new Aldi today.

Bought 3 massive bags of shopping for £20 which contained a lot of meat, fruit and veg and chocolate etc so colour me impressed on the price.
Quality seems really good and a lot of the meat and veg is British which is excellent.

They have the pay then pack concept which doesn't seem too bad once you've got the idea.

    I'll be going again.

I might win most mundane topic of the week for this, but what are people's thoughts on Aldi?

Shop there all the time and at Lidl ... I hate Tesco's with a passion. The beer, wine, meat and cheese are excellent and you can save a fortune on cleaning stuff.

Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!

  • Aldi is brilliant.

The ones near us all stock a great range of proper ales. My favourites are the Williams Bros ones which are 1. Genuinely brilliant award winning ales 2. 60p a bottle cheaper than they are in any other supermarket.

I've always found their fruit and veg to be good quality too.

It was all going well for us with Aldi.....until we got the famous parking invoice for overstaying the 90 minute limit at our local one. Google 'Aldi parking' for the background.

£40 charge, £70 if you don't pay within 2 weeks. Made to look like a fine, but isn't.

We've appealed to 'Parking Eye' and Aldi's themselves (who get so many complaints about this they have a 'parking department) so we'll see what happens.

Robbing C*nts. Like most of these things, it's the law-abiding and vulnerable who suffer; Johnny Chav from the estate probably hasn't got his motor registered in his name, wouldn't pay anyway, and wouldn't worry about such things.

Oh, and I'd like to thank the DVLA for passing on my name and address to what is essentially a legalised scam.
