FFS, two blokes in probably the hardest positions in sport smashing each other all afternoon, a comment is made in the heat of the moment, bloke apologises, other bloke says OK.

That should be it. Where do we want the sport going? The faux outrage and condemnation is very, very football.

The thing is is that firstly it's hardly heat of the moment, the second is that it's been said and heard on tv, fuck all to do with football or anything else.

This sweeping under the carpet of what is in effect, legally racism is a fucking disgrace to the game. Football would at least deal with things like this properly. Give Racism The Red Card etc.

How many times do I need to say, would the attitude be different if Itoje had been told to go back to his mud hut black boy. Legally it's the same thing whether or not you think it is or should be...It is the same.

The laws are pretty clear on this and people seem to be ok with this because he's not black, they don't think it's that bad or it's done "in the heat of the moment" It's fucking bollocks. 

Some posters on here are letting themselves down over this with what is IMO an outdated dinosaur attitude.

It's unlikely anybody's going to come up with anything new on the subject, and all that's going to happen is that it'll all get more heated. The last thing anyone wants is for this thread to get locked...right?

I'm not sure how this sits with me to be fair, we've all seen clips of black guys laughing along with a Jim Davidson routine back in the day.

Regardless of Lee's interpretation of it, it's still racism on a rugby pitch, which was heard on TV, however you paint it and as such should have been punished according to the rugby laws, which would have been 4 weeks, less 50% for apologising.

Had the situation been on me and a gay jibe, I'd have responded with wit and humour and banter, because that's what a strong person does.

Personally I think this is better for the sport and sets an example to other players. Marler makes dumb comment in the heat of the moment - apologises at half-time - the apology is accepted. Lee helps defuse the situation by saying he thought it was banter.

@lloyd .. you're just stoking a fire that has gone out. The decision has been made, all parties agree it was banter so let's move on.

I'm not trying to start an argument or fall out with anyone, personally I'm just disappointed with the way the whole thing has been handled, as well as the way in which a long list of infringements have been dealt with over the last x number of years.

The citing commission is basically a lottery and refs interpretations are increasingly the deciding factors in games. I can't remember the last game I watched where there hasn't been some monumental fuck ups by the ref and increasingly there's incidents which need to be looked at and some kind of retro-active punishment is needed.

I know people make mistakes but I'm not sure how so many incidents were missed, just in the Eng v Wal game. 

Rugby gets held up on a pedestal by fans and football looked down on for diving and play acting but the cheating that goes on at every ruck is just as bad for me and institutionalised from top to bottom, it's killing the game and with so many laws, interpretations and the ref being the sole arbiter we have a recipe for disaster, officiating hasn't moved on in 15 years while the game itself is unrecognisable.

If it continues without any changes I think I'll end up stopping watching the game as there's little enjoyment there now.

I'll not mention this incident again and I'm aware that some people will have a different interpretation as to what happened and should happen, interesting to note however are @fretmeister comments, someone who we can all agree has some legal knowledge which is the angle I'm coming from on this and from where I think incidents like this should be dealt with, regardless of the parties involved opinion.

To move the conversation to a slightly different and more technical point - was Cole's sin binning technically correct? No doubt that he deserved it, but the penalty was reversed for Francis' offense. If the penalty is reversed does the binning stand? I genuinely have no idea in this. Does it depend on the chronological order of the offenses? Has a binning ever been reversed?

He still commited the penalty so the reversal afterwards is irrespective I would have thought. Not heard of a binning being reversed during the game.
