Dude...all great vids...personally as an S1 user I have loads of questions on that alone,..plus the usual general questions.

Just on the vocals...any reason why you didn't use an FX send for all those verbs etc?

    Save on processing power?

And...how come 2 x Pro EQ on some tracks?

Did you write the automation in real time with fader, or draw it in?
Bit of both to be honest. Studio One does this automation clean up thing too, so when you ride a fader is kinda tidies up your crappy fader riding!

Mainly because I want multiple reverb tails all combined together, rather than a thicker single reverb if that makes sense?

The first EQ usually serves to clean up resonance problems and to do a basic high-cut and low-cut. Then the second serves the more surgical stuff.

  • So watching the bass one now, the clank track, is that a duplicate of the other tracks or did you double track the bass? I pretty much always quad track distorted guitars but usually just use one take of bass.

They're all totally separate recordings dude.

Clean tracks - amp + cab + mics
clank tracks - Darkglass + amp + cab + mics (all the low-end filtered)
dirty tracks - Darkglass + amp + cab + mics

Sorry, I meant that they're different recordings. But they are all the same DI going through. Hence tightness!

  • How do you know frequencies to boost and cut on the drums?  Like how do you know the stick attack is the 3 - 5k region?

Well you should always use your ears, and use the resonant EQ trick to dial it in. But there are some basic guidelines out there. I've just kinda learned from various online resources over the years. I recommend this book: http://www.systematicproductions.com/mixing-guide.htm

    And this one:
    http://www.mixingwithyourmind.com/

They're the two best resources ever imho.

  • I haven't had time to actually watch the videos in full but basically what you are saying is that you recorded a load of stuff into the computer and the computer's do-dah sorted it all out into a song and made it sound good, right?

Yes, I genuinely have been asked something very similar MORE THAN ONCE?

Yeah exactly. With different settings for each group essentially.

Yeah you just hit the button marked "pro tools" and it pro toolses it.

If you want to get really fancy, use a little trick I like to call "audio exciter on every track then eq in a v shape". simple.

Mixing With Your Mind is one of the best books ever - quite probably the best book related to production I've ever read.  I recommend buying it direct though.
