Ok, so I haven’t ridden a bike since I was a teenager, but I’m looking at getting my licence - I’m in Queensland so have to do something called Q ride which is a compulsory 2 day course to get my learners licence, which I’m looking to do in the next few weeks

I’m looking at a bike to commute about 10/15 minutes every day on 80km speed limit roads and for having a scoot about on the weekends - no motorway riding - the Sunshine Coast has some great beachside roads that would be really fun and the weather is great here 90% of the time.

I love the look of the Honda Grom’s (MSX125) and the Kawasaki z125’s and the reviews say they’re great fun - but I’m worried I might look a bit stupid on them because they’re pretty small - but I’m only 5ft 7” and 70kg so I might get away with it ... anyone had one or ridden one or got any suggestions for a fun, cheap Learner bike?

Just did first proper days riding since end of November ........spent all yesterday on a Triumph Rocket 3 Roadster ; it was a lot more agile and easy to manage than I had expected ....quite liked it but still prefer the Diavel X

I’m 6 foot and started out on a BSA Bantam. I must’ve have looked like a circus clown perched on it. But seriously, don’t worry about looking daft (I doubt you will anyway), either of those is a decent bike and will do just fine to learn the basics.

Suzuki VanVan has retro styling and is good fun. The big fat tyres make it look like a bigger bike than a 125.

Suzuki Van Van looks like what we called a Monkey Bike in the 1970
even if it's a weedy little 125 that couldn't pull back a foreskin let alone a wheelie it should still have a macho name like
Diavel , Fireblade, Hyabusa , Rocket , Nightster , Bonneville, V Rod etc etc
My son had a Yamaha yzf 125 and it was actually a very quick little thing and looked not totally dissimilar to the R1 that it's modelled on .....he ended up T boning a BMW 5 series on it ( was ok but shaken ) but it would do 82 mph

The Van Van was a kind of beach bike in the early 70s, the current ones are a kind of reissue. The name is supposed to represent the engine noise in Japanese.

They're great fun, if they made one of around 400cc I'd have one like a shot.

Cheers all - a KTM 390 Duke has come up locally at a good price - they also look like a fun, learner legal bike

Great bikes - snatchy throttle which takes a bit of getting used to, but they handle really well
This week's procrastination forum might be moved to sometime next week.

Good to know - there are a few for sale near me and I think it’d be a better choice than the Grom because I think I’ll be itching for a full size bike ...  I’m doing the Q ride next weekend and looking forward to getting out

Before I opened that photo I feared the worst for your bike.
Great shot, looks like you're in the Midwest of America or something.

Ha! I can see why you thought that

It’s halfway up a mountain near Abergavenny, looking up towards the Beacons. Slightly cheesy but had to be done.
