Roberta Flack's version of First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. The song was already fifteen years old by then and sang as a rather flat folk song by various folk acts.

My wife and I compiled a CD for the bar after our wedding. She chose Roberta's version, and I chose Johnny's. I was right, unless she's reading this, in which case she is always right. :-)

Almost..the vocal delivery is phenomenal but the guitar part misses the whole point of the song, just adding in those dissonant intervals would have made his version perfect.

The only one I can think of right now that hasn't been mentioned is - Love Machine - Arctic Monkeys

Edit - Actually I retract that, the original is better than the video below having given it another listen :P

Beatles (or Ferris Bueller) - Twist and Shout.   The original version of the song is awful.

    Has anyone mentioned R E S P E C T by Aretha Franklin?

No, the song wasn't written for them.  It was written and performed by the Vaselines who released it in 1988 (I think)

Girls Just Want To Have Fun. Cyndi Lauper's version is miles better than the original, which was quite a rapey song written and performed by a man.
