I voted remain. I have since heard several very convincing, well-argued cases for why we will be better off for having left.

Leaving aside the initial political train-wreck it has left (which, again, in hindsight may prove not to be such a bad thing), I am coming around to the idea that this may herald a positive movement forwards for the UK.

    We'll see, eh?

A very good friend and colleague of mine -  Spanish IT engineer - thinks he'll have to move back to Spain because his wife has been made redundant - with Brexit and downsizing cited as the reason.  She can't find other work, what she does is fairly niche and market driven.

The kicker for me is that he's the best as what he does - possibly in the world.  Losing him will be a nightmare for the firm.

All anecdotal, of course.  But it's really happening, regardless of the causes.

My wife has just been told that this is probably the last Spanish course anybody in the IPO will need for the foreseeable future, as there won't be anybody applying for any lucrative jobs in the EU patent office with all this uncertainty around.

    Feckless, feckless, feckless. Utterly feckless.
Sorry about your wife but what I don't get is why people like you don't go round to Call me Dave's house and burn it down. He called the referendum, he ran a bad campaign - in short he dragged defeat from the jaws of victory. From where you're sitting Big Dave is more to blame than the people who voted Brexit.
    It's all Oliver Cromwell's fault.

Aye...my wife's suddenly in the position where she's having to do care work (she's a care manager), because most of their staff are European (they can't seem to get British people to even apply for those jobs round here) and half of them fucked off in disgust after the referendum.

EDIT: For irony's sake, it's probably worth mentioning that her boss is Turkish.

Exactly. I'm no Cameron apologist (though I do seem to find myself apologising for Cameron, so maybe I am) but every voter is a grown-up. We were given the power to make the decision and we made the decision we made. Blaming the guy who allowed us to make the decision for the decision (especially when he told you to make a different one) is not the behaviour of a grown-up.

Give it 12 months and there will be a labour crisis in the care, labourer and cleaning professions.

I think we should have had a leave or remain vote on the thousands claiming benefits, U.K. Citizens or otherwise.

She knows quite a bit, ta, what with being Spanish and all. She's also pretty shit hot at English, although to be fair she drew the line at learning Welsh.

Language courses are not much use anyway. You need to go their and immerse yourself in the language for at least 3 months.

The UK just detach itself from having to pay the biggest set of contingent liabilities every run up in history. We voted out just in time to not be asked to help bail out Italy's banks, which are 6 months off recapitalization. Greece has some big payments coming too, then the domino effect will start again.

I never said they were friends. I have very few friends, these are the usual primary school parents who probably own 5 books between them.

ownership of books ≠ intelligence/common sense.

I point you in the direction of rule 1

Well you just made that up, of course it doesn't have anything to do with intelligence or common sense. I use it as a gauge of "world-view" if you like. Narrow-minded people *tend* not to read much in my experience, regardless of education, social standing etc.

Do you need to read much these days? People travel, go to work where they engage with people from different countries/backgrounds and watch TV and videos on the internet .. I've met narrow minded people who are well read. They tend to read books that chime with their point of view.

Three-quarters of my colleagues at work claim some benefit or other.
