The stratele for when I want a clean fendery type sound, and for unplugged noodling, cos it's the one I have 'out'. All the others are interchangeable really, clean or dirty stuff in any style. I could probably manage with less guitars, but they all feel different, and look cool in their own way.
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

    335 - 'serious' blues playing

So what do you use for 'flippant' blues playing?
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

Gibson Explorer - For things that want humbuckers and thicker low mids.

Gibson Les Paul - For things that want P90s and more complex/raw upper mids

Fender Strat - For things that want Single Coils and/or whammy bars.

Yamaha 12-String Acoustic - For things that want a 12 string acoustic that only stays in tune until the second verse.

Taylor GS Mini - For things that want 6 string acoustics and times I want a small guitar to take with me.

  • Fylde Alchemist for all acoustic duties

    Eggle for front room noodling

Musicman Silhouette for when can't work things out on the Eggle

Carvin strat for rough gigs and when I can't make my mind up

The rest looking pretty on stairs wall until I decide I'm bored with the front room guitars except Yamaha acoustic I keep in the pub.

Two amps for falling over because they are always in the way, they also double as cat stands when I decide to move them

Strat as "home", can cover most things.

Schecter PT for humbucker duties, can do anything that Strat can't, from high gain super-strat type sounds to spiky Tele on steroids stuff.

Jaguar, for noisy, soundscaping, take me out of my comfort zone duties.

Midtown, to cover the occasional 10 minutes of bad Robben Ford duties.

  • Strat - pretty much everything.

    335 - 'serious' blues playing

    Spare Strat - slide/midi controller

    D28 - main acoustic

    GS Mini - 'sofa' guitar

    Busker Delta - slide/blues

Taylor Nylon String - not much - just the odd bit of recording
I sincerrely hope that this is accompanied by much chin stroking beforehand, lots of guitar face during, and composed relfection on a good job of guitar work well done afterwards.

Oh go on - make a joke out it!

In order to become so adept at blues guitar work, I've lived a life of repression, poverty and emotional insecurity - in the hope that others will be moved by my chosen means of expression.

This was no easy life-choice, I can assure you....

  • Being that all I'm doing these days is writing and recording a multi-instrument project I kind of try out a few with no plan unless I need a whammy bar.(I've only got one with it).  I often find that the one I thought would be great for a part isn't.

Daft as it may seem, I've never really thought about it - I tend to play/rotate my guitars depending on mood. But at a gig I'll take two guitars - a h/b (eg LP Custom, SG Standard) and a single-coil (Strat or Tele), or my PRS Cu24 (both).  I'll tend to use LP/SG for rock (Led Zep, ZZ Top, Bad Co, Free, Cream, Aerosmith etc), and the Strat or Tele for where I want a cleaner, brighter or more 'specific' tone (eg Sweet Home, country type stuff, certain Stones songs, Hendrix/SRV stuff etc).  I have a Washburn electro-acoustic that is specifically for acoustic stuff (when I'm in the mood).

I started out with nothing..... but I've still got most of it left (Seasick Steve)

Fender Strat (real one) and Les Paul (cheap copy). Both are versatile guitars but it seems to be easier to achieve a heavier sound with the Les Paul on high gain, so for that kind of stuff, the Les Paul. I mainly play the Strat though. Sometimes if I noodle around and record something I'll deliberately use both on different parts, for variety.

SG - main guitar used for everything. Whatever tuning the band is in,  current is Eb.
Strat copy - backup but really it's terrible so never gets used. Standard tuning.
Acoustic - living room guitar that never really gets played.

May add a les paul jr p90 back in when I can afford it so I have a backup/2nd guitar I actually want to play.
