However solo guitarists who join a band can often have better sounding albums. I.e. Joe Satriani I look be his solo stuff but I think Chickenfoot was a perfect outlet for him.
Wes Borland, from Limp Bizkit, his first album as Black Light Burns, called Cruel Melody is cracking
Martin Gore's solo stuff is good, but electronic, so not to everyone's taste
I also really enjoy Pete Townshend's 'All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes'.
The first few Black Label Society albums while Zakk Wylde was still in Ozzy's band, too... back before Zakk became a caricature of himself

Stranger in this Town is a tremendous album with some great players on it... Tony Levin is on bass for quite a bit of it and Eric Clapton is very much on form on "Mr Bluesman".
