Pretty shit list really. Jazz drummers are generally so far ahead of rock and pop drummers there is no real competition.

Jazz drummers generally can't play rock. They don't have the testicular fortitude required.
Ginger Baker and Charlie Watts might disagree.

Chris Adler, Abe Cunningham, Dave Lombardo, Gavin Harrison, Mike Portnoy, Jeff Porcaro, Jimmy Chamberlin, whoever the drummer in Toe is. And Marco Minnemann, I swear to god he must be bionic. And the drummer in Ride (Laurence Colbert I think?), he's a beast.

    And Lars, obviously.

Vinnie's work with Zappa, Beck and Tal Wilkenfeld surely speaks for itself.

    As for Terry Bozzio?

Which reminds me, I must buy an SG ;)

I guess it depends what is meant by the top 10..
the 10 most off the scale technique wise or the 10 that are most amazing and musical with it..

a lot of amazing drummers have been listed already..
Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy, Vinnie C, Billy Cobham, Dennis Chambers, Thomas Lang, Ian Paice, Bill Bruford, Simon Phillips..

so here's a few very nice players not yet mentioned..

    Steve Gadd <- goove Meister
    Boon Gould: Level 42
Pierre van der Linden: Trace and Focus
    Alan White: Yes
Pete Alexander <- astonishing funk / gospel drummer
Craig Blundell <- DC Band and Frost
    Pat Mastelloto: King Crimson
    Vergil Donati <- simply amazing
    Omar Hakim
Tommy Clufetos <- cos he's mental the way he beats the kit half to death

play every note as if it were your first

  • @Clarky - Totally with you on Boon Gould, he was ace with Level 42

No one has mentioned David Garibaldi from Tower Of Power. He's incredible, as are the whole band :-)

I saw Boon Gould live with Level 42
I knew he was good from the studio recordings, but never realised quite how good until I saw him like..
    absolutely superb…

another amazing drummer not mentioned above is Dave Wekl

    and Chester Thompson: Genesis
play every note as if it were your first

  • Best drummer I have actually seen live would have to be Chad Wackerman.

Live with Allan Holdsworth, just over the river a few years ago. Just as good as he was with all of his Zappa stuff. Quite the rhythmic genius :)

    No Dennis Chambers?

    Crappy list.

    Tré Cool (Green Day).

I'm not a massive fan of the band but he's excellent. The bassist isn't bad either.

That list is a load of sh*te. They've missed out like 50 drummers that should be in anyone's top ten.

    Good call :)

I especially love his playnig on the album Trace.. he's really full-on and exciting.. I love drummers that don't hold back..

I was a drummer long before I was a guitarist.. Pierre v d Linden was a massive influence / hero..

interestingly, when I programme drums [I did the drums on the Civilians album], form time to time I can hear my hero's popping thru... Pierre v d Linden, Alan White and Niel Peart seem to be most prominent..

hmmm.... influenced??? or plain ripping them off??? lmao..

play every note as if it were your first

  • No particular order (and only drummers I've seen live)

Brann Dailor (Mastodon- Frighteningly fast & complex patterns... AND he sings!)
Bill Ward (Sabbath- Jazzy yet heavy)
Jimmy Chamberlin (Pumpkins- He left... they released Adore. Nuff said).
Dave Grohl (Everyone who asks- The fact that he's drummed for Nirvana, QOTSA, Probot, Tenacious D, Killing Joke, Crooked Vultures, et al speaks for itself)
Joey Jordison (Slipknot-I was there at Download when he sat in for Lars. Impressive).

Pierre brought out a drum tutorial years ago - it was too hard so few people bought it .. :-)

    He's a one off .. nice guy. I met him in the 70s ..
