For a moment there, I thought you were suggesting that Emp was a massive, massive .....
Oh!
Both of them.

Rust is usually cheap to fix, and nothing else will ever go wrong
Definitely not a cheap fix.

The remedy is to replace the chassis...

Something with MOT to get you through your period of enjoyment then sell on. You buy it cheap eyes open knowing it has rust at the price that reflects the same then sell it afterwards to the next person, still with MOT and price reflect the same.
Or are you intend to keep the MX5 for ages now?
Or have you not made up your mind yet after 2 months?
Fine if you don't want rust but you have got to reset your expectation for £1500. What you are looking for vs what reality actually offers are not in the same universe. If you want better condition you need to increase your budget, people are not going to sell great condition cars for bottom dollar.
My better half bought a car today and she's the most indecisive person I know. After reading this thread I feel like she deserves a trophy.

I sold a 15 Yr old mk2 last year for £1000. MOT never failed on chassis rails as they are actually hidden by a plastic indertray. MOT is not allowed to remove this to check.
Anyway, I reckon it would be pretty easy to find a mx5 for £1500 with a year's MOT, run it for 9 months and still get most of your money back. And have enjoyed the thrill of driving during ownership.
But yes, the £7k mk3 mx5 is what I'd be doing.
And "tomorrow".
Although I suppose "picking something up" could mean a pint of milk,
