Band names wot u have been in..

What's Hot

edited September 2013 in Off Topic

Looking back over my less than glittering musical 'career' I was thinking about some of the names of bands that I have been in...which brought a smile to my face...so I thought, for amusement, I'd list them here with their musical genres.. some names might bring a smile...
I can't say I was happy with most of them..but naming bands is usually a collective decision unless you walk into an existing 'unit'

so here comes my embarrassing history :)

Loaded Dice - classic rock
Gestalt  pop-rock (the rhythm guitarist was German..hence the name)
Paradox - 70s rock meets new wave
Nell's Little Oranges - jazzy-funk
Sample & Hold - another jazzy adventure
Mac & White - new wave/avant-garde
Soul Trader - serious soul/funk
Chillin' Out - acid jazz
Trenchfoot and Thrush - manic punk metal.. not a serious venture I hasten to add :)
SweetPea - a collective music project - soul/jazz/funk
Masquerade - very pro function band. good earner but I was selling my soul..

Anyone else care to share?

A mate of mine was so inspired by the band 'Gay Bikers On Acid' that he called his own venture:
'Lesbian dope-heads on mopeds" .. inspired!

    • Crankshaft (my idea) - blues/rock & prog rock
    • B/euro/cratic WASTE (my idea, with the anarchist circle around the A in waste) - Crankshaft re-formed for a couple of gigs
    • Nightshade (someone else's idea) - medium weight folk-influenced prog rock
    • Strange Brew (band decision) - blues/rock much of which had been written or popularised by Eric Clapton. Great fun, and still my best gig
    • Timeshare (someone else's idea) - naff pop covers in social clubs
    • Top Notch Boogie Band/Midnight Hour/Universal Vibe - various names for the "function band" that I quit because they couldn't be Rsed to play any gigs. The first name was my suggestion, thrown out after 3 months in favour of the 2nd, which I went along with quite happily. It got replaced when we discovered another band using the same title in a similar part of the market. The last I couldn't really be bothered with, but I left soon after.

"Working" software has only unobserved bugs. (Parroty Error: Pieces of Nine! Pieces of Nine!)

Only the ones that make me cringe/chuckle now:

Foutini - named after what the Jawas in Star Wars shout when they ambush R2D2.

Vinegar Stroke - 'hard rock' covers bands at University. We were dreadful.

Large Bread / Saucy Jack - the names me and my tattooist go out under for 'incognito' shows.

I genuinely can't remember any of the embarrassing covers bands' names...

Oh actually, edit - a couple which I think were actually pretty good, both indie-ish bands - Chaos Parade and Nightworker Revival.

Toxic Death - thrash metal band I joined in school (short lived, couple of gigs)

Mort - thrash metal, post-school (short lived)

Septimus - grunge covers and some originals (filled in on bass for one gig)

The Firewatchers - my 'main' band, mostly originals in a hardcore/skate/metal vein. Bloody loved that band. (recorded and gigged over several years)

    over a decade hiatus...

Cunning Stunts - terrible done-to-death name but not too shabby a covers band. (short lived, didn't get as far as gigging due to the singer being a dick and it being 'his' band)

The Speyside Sessions - one off album to raise money for Save the Children. Rather successful too ;)

Gav's Dad & The No-Legs Five Zappa covers. We thought we were great. Hmm.

    Black Vömit originals, "food metal".

Roadhouse (ho hum) rock covers. Competant, but soul destroying.

Angelic Afterbirth a pal's metal band I helped out in for a few months. A rehearsal brought the immortal comment "Can you play so it doesn't sound like Keith Richards?"

Lixarto originals, hugely entertaining for me, mainly as I wrote all the stuff. More line-up changes than Rainbow.

(some solo stuff here, usually billed as The Amazing All-Elastic Zap The Lizard Floorshow)

8 More Days original duo. One of us was a dick. Hmm.

Great Idea for a thread. I have loads

Death by Milk - Name inspired by Zappa's "Ship arriving too late to save a drowning witch" My first band when I was 14. Original rock/metal band.
Withnail - The same band when I was 15 now rock covers.
The Strange Kings - Abortive attempt at a blues band at uni. Hated the name (everyone called us the pretentious kings)
The Soul Penguins - Soul/Funk covers at uni
The Angry Badgers - Piss about covers band with people from work based around a story about badger attacks in the local news.
Grow - Indie originals band REM/Pixies influenced. Played around Camden tried to get signed.
Black Assassin - Rock originals again around Camden
Austin - Country rock originals. Fell to bits when the drummer pissed off to be the producer of Dr Who Confidential!
The Bedroom Hour - Indie rock originals. Left because they were much more serious about it that me (I'd given up on getting signed by that point). They are still going and getting BBC airplay.
Dark Energy - Rock covers. My main band from 2008 to the start of this year.
Sister E and The Filthy Lounge Band - My current band. Soul/Funk covers.

0reaction image LOL 0reaction image Wow! 0reaction image Wisdom
  • Toxxic Waste - Metal covers when I was about 14.  We used to use lines from The Young Ones for lyrics for our original songs.

Berseka - Thrash/punk band who later became Salem Orchid and subsequently Akercocke.

Blind Blonde - My indie period. Recorded some good stuff with a girl singer.

Snug - More indie stuff - played a few gigs supporting Gene in the 90's.

Throat: Slashed - A death metal band which lasted fone pub meeting and four rehearsals.

1888 - A solo metal project which as with most things I do, I lost enthusiasm for quite quickly.

I think this is all of them. Playing guitar unless otherwise mentioned.

The Raygunz - first band at school, punk/slightly goth.
Negative Earth - trippy gothy blues, never gigged.
    Smokestack Lightning - 50s/60s rock'n'roll/blues.
Io (not iiO, unfortunately) - bedsit pop.
    Turquoise - dreampop. (Bass)
The Manhattan Project (also unfortunately not the one with Stanley Clarke!) - prog/soft-rock.
Wild Honey - acoustic-electric pop 6-piece girl band
    Splinter - club/functions.
    Unquiet - alt-rock.
    Kirsty Baird - pop/weddings.
    The Dagmars - 50s pastiche rock'n'roll.
The Angel Conversations* - alt/acoustic rock.
    Kurtz* - garage/grunge. (Bass)
The Omega Suite - art rock. (Bass)
Man And Superman - some sort of rock. (Bass)
Caroline Gilmour - singer-songwriter pop. (Guitar and bass at different times.)

*Still in latter-day versions of these.

aRe wE theM - best tribute band name ever :).
