  • I just actually watched the Basement video again, not watched it for a good while. I'd forgotten about the Kills cover Kissy Kissy in the middle of Rich Kid Blues, I was big into them at the time (the singer from the Kills was in Dead Weather also) so I remember that making my day.

Also spotted they give a very deliberate close up of his amps, with the settings written on for the two aforementioned Gretch guitars which is interesting (because I'm an obsessed nerd)

Annoyingly the image is too dark on my screen to see what is going on with the cables - do you think he's using both channels on the Silvertone and the Vin channel on the Twin and the cables are just running under the Silvertone from a splitter behind, or is there some weird bridging/jumpering between the two amps? Hard to tell where the cables are running from

Well - that is where the Manic is my name comes from. Seems them soooo many times. The Holy Bible is amazing guitar work.
I misread your name as LPManiac! Either is a great one!
huge manics fan too, seen them many times over the years, what a band and Bradfield is a top draw player - every album of theirs has class playing all over it. And he sings.
A far better musician than stuck in the 80’s widdly tappy bores.
Different people may have a different opinion and thats fair enough

I recall seeing the Magnum TV advert - Release The Beast, Dare To Go Double, in 2016:-

The song is High Ball Stepper by Jack White:-

I had this impression of the Manics that was born out of their 'If You Tolerate This' period which was good but it definitely didn't grab me. But I heard Holy Bible and Generation Terrorists at a friends house and they completely blew me away. Holy Bible still remains one of my favourites and I'm sold on them.

Fantastic band. Seen them a few times.

Yep.  I can do without some of his guitar effects from the later Stripes stuff, but he rocks there's no getting around it.

Gold against the soul (2nd album) is excellent too, there's some great guitar playing on that. It's mad to think that on Generation Terrorists, he'd only been playing the guitar for a handful of years. Still gutted that I missed the Holy Bible anniversary tour in 2014.

Their most recent album is pretty good too.

Listening to Holy Bible this morning to help me along with work - never really listened to them before (aside from knowing If You Tolerate This), I must admit to never having really given them a chance. Really enjoying the guitar parts, really nicely put together and interwoven, and some great suspended notes in the chords. Never been keen on his singing voice (just personal preference) but respect to him for playing those lines and singing at the same time, that's impressive stuff.

  • I've seen the Manics a bunch of times. Even at Glasto in the rain promoting their b-sides collection they were still epic. Fantastic player, even better singer, and bloody nice bloke if reports are to be believed.

And as a HUGE Manics fan, I do think that Tolerate is an incredibly simple yet elegant solo. Perfect for the song.

Glad to hear that people appreciate Bradfield’s playing. More obscure great guitar work is a song called Comfort Comes. Two great solos that sound like a Jazzmaster to me https://youtu.be/3F3Mr0j3n0A

I'd always thought Motorcycle Emptiness was such a classic Les Paul sound only to find it was played on a Thinline Tele :D

Yep on Richey’s Thinline Tele, no less. Which Bradfield still uses live for open G songs.

And the riff for ME he just made up on the spot when the producer for Generation Terrorists told him in the studio that the song needed something between the verses.

The Bradfield Guitarist video is a good watch: https://youtu.be/5gslKjS155Q

Really enjoyed that. Was weird hearing Kevin Carter without the bass.

Everything Must Go is one of my favourite albums of all time, maybe I should listen to another of their albums.

They don’t have a duff track i can think of, i had generation terrorist on in the car earlier - motorcycle emptiness followed by you love us is a proper treat for the ears.
    A truly great player

I'm the opposite. I thought the manics could be good but I found one of their albums in a charity shop, played it in the car on the way home and didn't really listen to it again. Can't remember what album, seem to remember something about flowers in a hospital or something.
Thought the guitar tone was pretty generic lp into Marshall .

Listen to Holy Bible. It's in my opinion, one of the best albums of the 90's. An epic, politically charged, militant  sledgehammer of an album.

    I'll listen to that one.

Problem with political lyrics though is that people who agree with the political views expressed are obviously going to like it more than those who don't.

There is that. Maybe that's why I love it?

Although, didn't Paul Ryan from the Replican party say Killing in the name was his favourite song? And David Cameron said Eton Rifles was his?

The Manics are known as Old Labour champagne socialists but the Holy Bible is 80% Richey’s lyrics and vision - and it deals with a range of topics including prostitution, anorexia, (seemingly positive views towards) capital punishment, the Holocaust, and many others.... as well as the two Nicky Wire lyrics on American foreign politics and a nice nostalgic tune called This is Yesterday. Plenty for everyone....!

Yes only CP. Ambiguous more than positive shall we say. Loads of challenging complex lyrics. Amazing album.
