  • Possibly of interest to the hardcore Japanese cinema fans, I just watched Takashi Miike's "Black Society Trilogy". Not really a trilogy as such - just a trio of early movies (1995-99) by Miike that all deal with mixed race Sino-Japanese characters either actively involved in the criminal underworld or making a precarious living off close association with it. I'm a big fan of Miike's work,  but to be honest the first 2 films (Shinjuku Triad Society & Rainy Dog) are not great. They're competent but not very original. The 3rd film, though, Ley Lines, is much more interesting. It's still Miike finding his feet, but this one actually feels like a personal statement rather than "I'm going to make a gangster movie". Trilogy as a whole: 4/10; but Ley Lines by itself, 6.5/10

Curse of Dracula. Cheesy predictable script, terrible acting, awful effects, nonsensical story.

    Loved it. :)

I saw all of those at the cinema - I think maybe with the latter two as a double bill.  Didn't realise it was 20 years ago!  High time I re-watched them.

    Deadpool 2
I can't remember enough about the first film to be sure how they compare... but I really enjoyed this one, although my brother told me it was crap.

Went to see Jumanji The Next Level yesterday.

A predictable but entertaining film. Kevin Hart doing a Danny Glover impersonation is really quite good.  Dwayne Johnson doing Danny DeVito, not so much. The laughs are still there but the format is very much the same as the previous film.

It’s worth watching just for Karen Gillan, though.

One of those films you can watch time and again and will still make you laugh and requires no really effort to follow.

I enjoyed it and would give it a solid 7/10, others may not find it as enjoyable though. Depends if you like that sort of thing.

They’ve definitely prepared the way for a fourth Jumanji film, will be interesting to see if they can stretch the story any further.

There is no 'H' in Aych, you know that don't you? ~ Wife

Turns out there is an H in Haych! ~ Sporky

    Bit of trading feedback here.

    Not counting Zathura then?

  • Green Book - OK, so this is totally a feel good movie - a Christmas movie even - BUT it has two excellent performances from Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen and is a very entertaining way to pass a couple of hours.

Watched two classics , fuel and oil,  Convoy, always worth a watch!

Apparently, Violet, Rubber Ducks waitress girl friend was also dirty Lyles wife! Black Widows truck overturning wasn't supposed to happen but they cut it in after it did, and Convoy was the first film shot in some kind of wide cinematic something or other.

    Two lane Blacktop.

Old school street racing in America.

    Love a good road movie!

    Accident Man
Scott Adkins plays a London assassin who goes to war with his own firm when his ex-girlfriend is murdered in mysterious circumstances.  For the first few minutes I was struggling with the dodgy voiceover and sub-Lock Stock humour, but this is a surprisingly entertaining low-budget actioner.

Good call, haven’t seen that in years. ;) Keep meaning to re-watch Vanishing Point too.

  • Gave "Netflix's" 6 Underground a go last night. Managed to survive about 15minutes before switching it off - Ryan Reynolds is so annoying - I have no idea how he became a Hollywood star.

After that I've watched "Fractured" on Netflix as well - thriller with sam Worthington - confused father, recovering alcoholic, takes his wife and daughter to a hospital after minor accident - and he loses them.
Quite obvious twist, mediocre acting - watchable but nothing special.

    3/10

  • The Irishman.

Was ok, dragged on a bit.
Not as entertaining as goodfellas or casino.

Some of the best fight choreography I’ve ever seen in that film.

I’m so bored I might as well be listening to Pink Floyd

American Honey. Blew me away and gave an insight in the America that resulted in trump. Directed by a Brit (Andrea Arnold), it's a masterclass in a certain type of observational film making. Nothing much happens but it's always gripping. Beautifully photographed. 9/10

  • I’d noticed Logan was on the TV last night which I didn’t see but had it on this evening on Play Movies. I did see it at the cinema and had fond memories of it.
It’s a lot more slashy than I remember it and although it’s a simple road trip at heart it’s not as dumbed down or as CGI heavy as some of the Marvel universe films. Some fun and touching moments too.

I watched it today too. Good film.

The choreography with the little girl fighting is brilliant.

Although they would have been improved by not having MrsTheWeary saying ‘it’s Lyra Belacqua’ every few minutes.

There are some obvious CGI/ effects moments but there’s a lot of old fashioned throwing yourself about which I appreciate.

One of the best films of the last few years, I wasn't previously a big fan of Shia Le Beef but he gives an extraordinary performance in that.

I watched Border (Gräns) this afternoon. It's really deep shit wrapped up in an amazing, dark and painful fairy story. Highly recommended. Touches so many issues, gender, otherness, identity. It's great, if you like that kind of shit.
