The Book Thief. Superb! Heartbreaking and heartwarming in equal measure. Fantastic performances from Emily Watson and Geoffrey Rush as well as everybody else on screen.

Can’t think of a single thing I didn’t like about it. Very well done and very true to the book.

Watched It's A Wonderful Life this afternoon, well it is Christmas and it's a superb film.
Not watched it ( yet anyway) this Christmas but superb film. It’s a lot darker than people tend to imagine even if it has a dose of schmaltz and Jimmy Stewart’s performance is stellar.

Meet Joe Black. Don’t know why it’s taken me this long to see this one (mind you, it took me until earlier this year to see Forest Gump) but I wish I hadn’t waited so long.

Thought it was quite good. Anthony Hopkins was his usual self. Not a stand out performance but a solid and steady lead as always.

Brad Pitt was good as death too. Claire Forlani just spent the entire movie pulling a series of weird facial expressions and adding not much else.

The ending went on too long and I didn’t quite understand how Susan worked out that Joe was death without him telling her. However, she seemed to not only understand that she’d fallen in love with death but completely accept that her dad was about to die without a pause.

Still, overall it was a good enough plot to keep me watching so I’d give it a solid 7/10

Beauty and the Beast, the live action version with Emma Watson. Erm, Mrs B was watching it, honest.

Utter tosh, the cartoon is still way better. Emma Watson proves that she hasn’t improved as an actor since being Hermione, she also falls at the first hurdle by not exactly being a beauty. Emma Thompson puts on the most cringeworthy aw rite guvner cockerny accent since Dick Van Dyke. Ian McKellen just looks embarrassed to be involved in this steaming pile of dogdoo.

Just watched The Upside. Loosely based on a true story.

Kevin Hart does an admirable job of playing a more serious role of an ex con who’s hired as the unlikely carer for a rich quadriplegic man (Bryan Cranston).

It’s still very funny but not in the usual slapstick way of other Kevin Hart films I’ve seen.

Worth watching, it’s a nice story.

Along a similar theme, it reminds me of another film worth watching that I saw a few months ago, The Fundamentals of Caring with Paul Rudd. Again very funny and very touching.

Went to see Playing With Fire this afternoon with the kids.

It tried hard to be funnier than it was. The story was predictable and quite thin - but it’s a family/kids movie so it was never going to be deep.

For all that, though, I really enjoyed it and can’t claim to feel it was a waste of time or anything like that.

Most of it anyway. I must have seen it ten times over the years and remember reading the book of the film when I was a ( apparently lonely and sad) teenager.

It’s not brilliant but it has brilliant moments. Some of it maybe not 100% PC but considering the year (1979) and that it’s prison banter I don’t think there’s anything you’d complain about. Some sterling performances by Barker, Beckinsale and Brian Wilde as Barrowclough.

    The Rise Of Skywalker

No spoilers, but... if you're a fan of the series then it's worth seeing just to find out how it ends. As a film, not so much.

    National Lampoons Christmas Vacation,
Dated, but still funny, beats Home Alone any day.

    Bumblebee,
Cool film, one to watch with the kids.

    Aquaman,
Naa , Yeah but no but.

    Doom Annihilation,
    Nope, not my bag.

    Cosmos,
Yeah, no. Its Ok, but not great.

    Alita Battle Angel.
Its Ok, could be better , could be worse.

So yeah, not a great film watching week.

A Deuce , a Tele and a cup of tea.

Just watched Tears of the Sun again.

I wouldn’t say it’s a brilliant film but Antoine Fuqua does hit hard with some of the scenes and it gets a message across very well.

It’s a bit gung-ho, America saves the day again but is still powerful as a reminder of what happens in the world at times and the stain on the planet that the human species is.

It’s not easy to watch some scenes and it’s not at all a happy film.

Just had a go at watching 6 Underground on Netflix.

It lasted about 15 minutes before I came to the conclusion it was already unbearable.

Ad Astra - 2hr film that really drags. Incredibly boring, the visual effects are not enough to save it.
Zombieland double tap - just rubbish.

    The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.
If you like the Coen Brothers, I don't see how you could fail to enjoy this one.
All their trademark black humour, terrific screenplay and visual style.
It's a collection of 5 stories, none of which end very well. One in particular, Meal Ticket, is a terrible tale but told very humorously.
    Loved it.

  • Tueurs ( Above the Law)

French-Belgian crime thriller. Nearly non existent script, lots and lots of shooting, some posh cars. Based on actual unsolved murders from the 1980s I wonder how much the relatives of the deceased hated this.
It's relatively short and fast paced.
