    The Lighthouse

Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson go mad in an atmospheric period psychological horror inspired by Edgar Allan Poe with a bit of Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Intense and unsettling. Dafoe in particular is brilliant, as is the direction and photography. Not comfortable viewing but compelling, and although it’s not *really* horrific I think you’ll remember some of the more disturbing imagery for a long time. The use of a near-square aspect ratio increases the feeling of claustrophobia too.

    A strong 9/10

    Beautiful Boy
Very good, superb acting, intense, and a bit grim, but a good portrayal of drug addiction. Not exactly uplifting though.

We are watching films together much more as a family, like lots of people I suppose, so tonight I think we will go for something a bit more uplifting. Only so much tolerance for gloomy movies right now! Watched Casino Royale again, that's more like it.

    The Platform

On Netflix, 2019 Brazilian (?) movie about something ( social injustice sort of).
Not everyone’s cup of tea but if you like art house cinema with a side order of stabby it’s there for you.

    Go Karts (on Netflix)

Possibly the most predictable film I’ve ever seen. Still I did quite enjoy it.

Watched Thor:Ragnarok again today. Utterly bonkers, but some of the best lines/scenes in the MCU. Thoroughly entertaining.

Absolute Power, quite an old thriller starring Clint Eastwood and Gene Hackman and based on the book by David Baldacci.

Really quite good although the ending just sort of happened without any real buildup or drama. It also differs from the book quite dramatically, I seem to remember there was another main character that was omitted from the film and Clint Eastwood’s character is assassinated halfway through the book but never happens in the film.

Still a decently put together thriller though and one I will probably watch again on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Mrs Haych and I also watched Bounty Hunters, a 2010 part rom-com, part thriller starring Gerard Butler and Jennifer Anniston. He’s an ex cop turned bounty hunter, she’s a reporter on the break of a big story who also has a bounty on her after failing to show up in court. They are also ex husband and ex wife to each other so it sets the comedy aspect up quite nicely.

The first half of the movie is him trying to catch her and her trying to escape him before they both team up and break the case/story together.

Predictable in every way but still a better film than the 3/5 stars it got on Now TV and keeps you entertained throughout.

I just watched The Platform (El Hoyo) on Netflix - very good, quite bleak.

  • The Dead Don't Die. Well, I'm honestly not sure what to say about this. Don't watch it if you're expecting a zombie survival movie. I'd heard of Jim Jarmusch but not watched any of his other films but I understand that irreverent, meta, low key is his thing. The cast is pretty amazing and Tilda Swinton does not disappoint.
I found this made more sense after I read an interview with Adam Driver where he said that the first things they filmed on day one were all the scenes with him and Bill Murray in the car.

If anyone hasn’t been put off by the Adam Driver and Jim Jarmusch combination, I’d recommend Paterson. A slow film about the every day life of a NY state bus driver with a poetry writing hobby and an eccentric wife.
I'll get a round to buying a 'real' guitar one day.

My son said it was Portugese and I said from the titles I’d say it’s Spanish and he googled it and said Brazilian in Portugese.

There are at least two other 21st century films called The Hole so I suspect that’s why it isn’t called that in English.

It was certainly interesting and a bit of a change from Hollywood CGI fests and rom coms. MrsTheWeary said she was quite disturbed by it.

Where did you see this ICBM? I heard a review and it sounded ace. Then saw your post and really want to watch it. I thought it was only in cinemas very recently but they’re obviously all closed now and Sky store showed it as being available to buy in June or so (from memory).
