If it is fake, it's a real embarrassment to Paul Davids and a knock to his brand.

From what I believe, it went through quite a few hands (including a good friend) all of who said nope, not a chance, then one linked to the Hendrix estate 'authenticated' it, said it was and the game was on. I dont think the retailer is involved either. They seem a lovely if a but niave bunch, and Paul doesnt seem a fool either.  A shame for all publicly involved

I am never absolutely convinced either way when old photos or videos are used for comparison, no matter ow expertly people use overlays and various visual effects.  The fact is that old photos could have been taken through different lenses, from different angles, at different shutter speeds that weren't fast enough to freeze out blur, been subjected to reflections from the article or other surrounding articles, and been "tidied up" manually or digitally before or after rescanning or re-photographing the print.  A lot of weird things can happen to a photo as it is being taken and during the developing and printing.

Personally I don't really have a great amount of sympathy for millionaires that buy collectibles only for resale and discover that they are not genuine.  As far as I understood the guy selling it currently does not play guitar and it was simply an expensive investment.  Buyer beware / caveat emptor applies to everybody.

Yeah, absolutely. Reading back, maybe "a real embarrassment" is too much. I'm just thinking about all the woah and face pulling that everyone was doing in the video thinking it was a Hendrix guitar. I'm sure he got paid well enough and can probably make more content out of it.

  • Such a fascinating story.

There was a 55 TV Special that I played at a workshop a few years ago which had a Clive Brown refinish on it. I was told at the time that it was such a convincing refinish that it'd fool a UV light test. I was so tempted, it was lovely, but couldn't afford it and it later sold. I then saw it pop up at Sixty Sixty Sounds a year or two later for £12k (more than double what it sold for) and being all original, specifically stating they'd had it tested under UV light. Interesting. I messaged them and said it was a refin citing where it came from and they took it off sale. They later relisted it as a refinish and sold it for much less. They seem like decent guys to me, though I can understand a cynic saying otherwise. I really hope they're not in on this Hendrix strat business.

ps that 55 TV Special is at ATB now, still tempted but it's waaaaay out of my price range now haha!
The 55 Special is mine. I don't know how sixty sixty missed that it's a refin, It's got Clive's initials stamped in the selector switch cavity. I think they are nice guys there but IMO ATB are more specialised in selling vintage stuff hence why im selling through them and they really check the guitar out prior to listing. I knew what I was buying at the time from sixty sixty but I always say wherever you're buying you need to do your research, don't ever reply on a dealers word.

100%. I knew it was yours too, I've followed that guitar online because when I tried it out years ago I really liked it, then saw it pop up on your instagram ha! That's crazy they missed a stamp in the cavity. ATB do seem to be way more on it and specialised.

Honestly, I think the massive amount of organising this took would have also required someone to say 'is this actually bloody real or not?!'

Paul clearly will have been paid well and part of a marketing campaign to sell it for big money, which has backfired.

I doubt anyone really knows who PD is outside of the online guitar world. I don't take much notice of influencers because I make my own decisions. Some of them, like Phil McNight, are interesting and seem genuine, (also the guy from China Guitar Sceptic - )

Who on earth is that marketing guy who clearly wants to just sell it for daft money?!

If it was the REAL strat and we had numerous guys and girls from current bands trying it out (from new to old bands) then that would be cool.

A guitar Youtuber who teaches online playing a potential fake? Meh.

PS - I am super cynical with ANY marketing. I am the worst person to try to sell something to. If I want it, I'll get it. That is it. I won't be talked round by someone being paid to sell me it.

He should do one of his reaction videos to the video showing it is not real with his annoying little gurning face in the corner over it.

I probably am. I realise how influential Youtubers are but it wouldn't sway me. I was a teenager in the 90s so it's all about the bands themselves not Youtube guitarists. Likewise, I wouldn't sign up and pay anything towards a Youtube channel. But I'll happily spend money on band merch, vinyl, guitars, and subscription's like Netlfix and Disney +.

I think he's a music teacher as opposed to a working muso. Which is cool. It's just that face of his...

He's too well-groomed to have been in any cool bands.  He's alright though.
