Inspired by the thread about the Grateful Dead PA.

I will nominate This Town Needs Guns.

...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead

I was always expecting something a lot heavier.

  • I missed that Discussion but would have piled in. Called The Grateful Dead complete with heavy metal imagery and what you get is ten minute country rock songs.
The Eagles of Death Metal come to mind but I presume that’s purposely ironic.
The Climax Blues Band and The Moody Blues. I think both started as blues bands but the number of 12 bars and songs about mojo hands where thin on the ground by the time they achieved commercial success.
The Moody Blues also heading lists of Bands You Didn’t Realise Are Brummies and Band Names Taken From Breweries.

Excellent call. I really like some of their stuff, but I think it's all off one album.

  • Oasis.

Literally the last thing I'd want to hear anywhere let alone whilst crossing a desert.

Distinct lack of flower arranging going on as well with that band. In the 90s many florists must have thought ‘at last here are musicians willing to sing about the issues that really matter to us’ only to be disappointed that Wonderwall wasn’t about a giant arrangement of chrysanthemums or that Sally Can Wait isn’t about a delay with an Interflora delivery.

Unless u=2, then u2 could indeed equal 4

I just checked, having not actually heard them before, and I think 10000 Maniacs qualify.

  • I was disappointed to find that the Black Keys largely play using the minor pentatonic scale and not the major pentatonic

  • Radiohead

I'd have expected a fun power-pop band, not a squeaky Joy Division.
