For me it's Giant's 'I'm a believer' with the mighty Dann Huff

Go West's 'We Close our Eyes'

Toto's 'I'll Supply the Love' - ok, the instrumental, 'Child's Anthem' is the first tune but this is the first song

I remember how I felt when I first heard More Than A Feeling, the opening track of Boston's debut album.  The use of acoustic guitar and multi-layered (although I didn't know that at the time) electric guitar created brilliant dynamics.  Brad Delp's vocal range and the way his voice almost seemed to merge into Sholz's lead guitar, or vice versa, was something I hadn't heard before.  I'm not a fan of lengthy intro's and build-ups.  The fade-in and build-up on More Than A Feeling was just right.  It sounds quite dated listening to it now, but at the time it was absolutely fantastic.

  • Some excellent choices so far. I'll add...

Get Miles by Gomez from Bring It On:

Tie Up My Hands by Starsailor from Love Is Here:

    Two utterly brilliant debut albums.

But seeing no one’s mentioned this yet, I’ll put forward Bombtrack.  Despite being consistently excellent, Rage Against The Machine never quite managed to top the impact of their debut album.  And this was a hell of a way to start it.

I listen to Evil Empire more than the debut, but hard to argue with that. I prefer the more raw production on EE, the drums and vocals sound particularly awesome. They should have opened it with Bulls On Parade!

Brann's drumming is on fire on this track. Anything that starts with the t-rex roar from Jurassic Park is going to be heavy.

Going Under is the opening track :).

Bring Me To Life is the second - but the first one I heard, and to date the last time I've heard a new song on the radio, gone directly to a record shop and bought the album. (Maybe this says more about the relative importance of radio and CDs today than about new music though.)

Arguably not their debut album either, although the first on a major label.

As a fan of Evanescence, I really ought to have known that … :)

Might be worth starting a thread for albums that might have made a stronger start using their second track.

  • I was starting to put some of these on a YouTube music playlist and got thrown by Foxy/Foxey Lady as it says Purple Haze is the opening track. So, it was Foxy Lady on the U.K. release, Purple Haze on the US release with Foxey Lady as an album track. Confusing but it does mean it’s an album with two opening tracks!
