I don't get gold tops..

Maybe controversial but I don't like the look of goldtop Les Paul's.

Intellectually I feel that I should find them cool but I just don't.

Conversely I find firebird's cool as fuck but I know not everyone does.

Nothing again gold tops but they're just not for me.

Am I the only one or am I about to get banished from the forum for my herecy?

A great p90 will be every bit as good or better than the paf equivalent, I love a goldtop personally, especially with a Bigsby.

Firebirds look cool and that's about it for me, love the sound not the size.

I think I said on a previous thread that all Les Pauls are sad and that they should be banned, and I haven't been banished, so you're probably ok.

It's nothing to do with p90's - I think the best les paul sound I ever heard in the room was Snowy White playing a Les Paul Deluxe with P90's into a Fender twin. 

It's the gold colour that does nothing for me.

I think it can look a bit flat on cheaper guitars, but on something like a Yamaha SG1802, where the finish has a bit of depth...

You clearly have a much stronger opinion than me I don't want to ban them, I just don't want one but there is a small part of me that thinks I should like them.

Depends what goldtops you’re looking at. Bearing in mind I’m pretty sure modern Gibson look naff because they’re not using the bronze powder they used 60 years ago.

You don’t need to justify why you don’t like how something looks.

Banished? You don’t deserve being banished, burnt at the stake is all you are good for!

I only like gold tops with a natural back, hate dark backs and I find some golds just look wrong (although haven’t worked out quite what the variation is). Don’t dislike a goldtop though.

You're not alone.  Gold tops do nothing for me either, but then each to his own.

I love gold tops but admit they can look rubbish under the wrong stage lights and Les Paul’s are a weird shape and I don’t usually get on with them. But I still want one. 

Re Firebirds I have fallen rather heavily love with a Pelham blue CS one but have never actually played one. I did have an Explorer for a while that I had no trouble with besides carrying the case, so I think it might be ok…????

Exactly this. I love a gold TOP Les Paul, particularly with P90s and Bigsby, but only with a natural/mid-brown back.
Dark backs look horrible and all-gold is an abomination.

Same with black tops for me.

But we all have our likes, preferences and peccadilloes. Vive la différence!

I personally like the look of a Les Paul, but of all the choices, the gold top is my least favorite. You are not alone.
