I don't get gold tops..

But I have a tobacco sunburst les paul and no firebird. So what does that say about me :-)

As a primarily acoustic guitarist I find the look of 99% of acoustic guitars terribly boring and bland 

I don’t generally like relicked elec guitars, but I must admit I do like the crackle glaze on an old goldtop

I do like gold-top LP standards provided they are tasteful gold colours (some are too garishly bright gold) but I don't like sparkly versions (eg Sire Larry Carlton L7 Gold top).  I've also seen some gold top Teles, Strats & PRS that look quite nice. 

Guitar finishes & pick-up preferences are entirely personal. I don't like overly fancy quilted finishes & overly ornate fingerboards, but others find them stunning. I'm not overly partial to the aesthetics of P90's, but others love them.  I don't like heavy relics, but there are those that swoon over them. If we all liked the same things it would be a boring world.

At least with the R7/R8/R9's it is difficult to find a Goldtop R7 without a telephone pole for a neck.
I am very partial to a Goldtop but it is just a nonstarter for me.
I don't want to be pushed into buying an R9 just to get a neck that is playable.

I don't know why Gibson don't make models with a variety of neck shapes.

I'm not a goldtop fanatic but I like them.  They look better with humbuckers than P-90s.

But my favourite LP finish is black top with a natural back.  Like this, only it'd look even better with uncovered pickups.

@octatonic I agre 100% on the R7 neck thing. Some dealers do spec them with a 59 neck though - I’m sure I’ve seen Wildwood offer those. One day I’ll get one…

I can take or leave the appearance of the Gold Top, but the sound they make is the real reason it is worth having one: You've got single coils but with a lot better and fuller tone, plus the additional sustain you get from the set neck and heavy body.

That combination can give you cutting, wailing lead tones which come through complex mixes with ease and the flat radius means you can have bends up at the dusty end ring out for ages. It makes it one of the best rock guitars you can get your hands on to the point where you won't really give a flying feck what the pant job is.
