Although generally I'd lean towards the Strat side of the argument...

I remember I was at an awards ceremony and I actually heard Tony Iommi say it was his favourite riff ever Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson tell the story of Thin

While you ol' boys carry on discussing which way and that.................I'll be over here writing terrible lyrics that haven’t relatable since 1950........... ;)
    Fixed.

I’m so bored I might as well be listening to Pink Floyd

I'm a bit like that indecisive character out of the fast show who changes his opinion to that of whoever spoke last. When I play or, ever better, listen to a good player play either guitar, I tend to come away thinking the Strat/Les-Paul is the best thing ever.

If forced at knifepoint to decide between them I'd probably choose a Strat as I think you can probably beef them up a bit more easily than you can thin-out the sound of a Gibson (at least one without a varitone).

Fortunately, we don't have to decide between them and many of us are lucky enough to own them, or lose variants thereof and enjoy both.

Why are most of the pictures used for reference of old/dead guitarists?

Both instruments have been around since the early 1950s, so that's 70 years or thereabouts.

Arguably, their heyday in terms of cultural influence was 50 years ago and the famous young adults who played them then will be either (a) quite old or (b) dead (particularly the ones who indulged in a hedonistic lifestyle, which was quite a few of them).

Why are most of the pictures used for reference of old/dead guitarists?
Because we don't listen to young/live guitarists. Not ones who play Les Pauls or Strats, anyway.

Probably true the cheeky young whipper snappers mostly play offsets!

My main guitars are a strat and a tele.

I've played a bunch of top-end guitars incl LPs, PRSes, custom shop strats and teles, Ibanezes and whatnot.

The 2 best guitars I've ever played are a 59 custom shop strat (belonging to my old teacher) and a 70s Fujigen made LP-alike.

Take from that what you will.

The only good thing on a strat is a neck pickup and I think a LP is too clunky now, a good compromise is a slab bodied LP with p90s

Not the (very few, of course) young whipper snappers I listen to, they play lots of different brands, often pointy-ish, but usually not Gibson or Fender.  Or offsets.

The three pickups on a strat are part of why it's such an expressive instrument.

Not to me, there's much better pickups for me personally, a HSS is better but I still want a blend circuit and split coil

A jazzmaster is the best fender made, again just my opinion as I've made and tried the rest

Obviously you need one of each. Unless all you play is high-gain mush where you can't actually tell what guitar it is, each does its own thing. Right tool for the job and all that.

Which is why you also need an SG, a solid tele, a thinline hollow tele, a gretsch, a 335 or similar, maybe a firebird, a Les Paul, a different Les Paul, a LP junior with a P90, a jag, a ricky 12-string, a divorce.......
Old, overweight and badly maintained. Unlike my amps which are just old and overweight.

Sadly the rest are all firmly on the ridiculous side.
