  • @Sporky - in that case, it'll be the noise rather than the shininess. I'd still recommend a heavy anti-gulp bowl, though...although her breed is somewhat less susceptible to bloat, it's still something to watch for in all large dogs given the speed at which it can escalate.

She's just had a munch out of the bowl so I think she's getting over it. Still not keen on her crate - she doesn't mind being in it, but the sound of the door closing seems to make her a bit skitty. Just the rattle - which I s'pose is a similar noise to the bowl.

Just use the usual positive-reinforcement thing and she'll get over it - give her a treat every time you close the door :)

Everybody told us that Akitas can't be crate-trained, but we fixed that by feeding her in her crate every time. Now she runs to her crate and rattles about at 5pm every day...

Yup. It's only the first day so lots of positive reinforcement and we're all getting the hang of it.

Lady BMcH had dogs growing up so thankfully at least one of us has a clue. ;)

    Lovely pup Sporky !

@digitalscream - tell me, what's your solution to the problem of continually accidentally kicking the dog's water bowl ?  We just keep doing it - a splosh here, a splosh there, it already messed up one part of the laminate !

Get a dog who sploshes it all over the place when she's drinking, then dribbles as she walks away. Makes the issue of you doing it a total non-issue.

I was going to suggest putting the water bowl in a corner and on a mat.

My solution involves more dogs, and thus wins.

    Fair point!

Sprocket had a pretty good first night and has been out to poop and wee twice already since I got up at 8. She's just waking up from a nap in time to meet my dear old mum. Busy day.

If I was getting another dog it would be an Old English. She's a beauty.

I went to school with a lad called John Collier (which was a funny name in those days as there was a chain of shops called John Collier) and he had an Old English which was like a teddy bear. Lovely puppy. :)

For a puppy she already looks massive. Can't imagine how big she'll be when she's fully grown.

If she's a purebreed, probably somewhere between 5 and 6 stone. If she's a cross, potentially a *lot* more.

She's a purebreed, KC and all.

I think she's around 6kg at the mo, and at a guess I'd say comparable size-wise to a full-grown Pug?

She looks amazing. Puppyhood can have its trying periods but so rewarding.

Indeed. Today was either snoozing or chewing. Turns out she likes those antler chews though, so my fingers are recovering a bit.

Yep, antlers are bloody brilliant - keep ours amused for days.

Beware rawhide chews, though. They can cause all sorts of gastric problems (took us a while to figure that out).
