One of our chihuahuas fell down the stairs this morning, and she's in a pretty bad way - she can't move her neck. She can move everything else and her reflexes and breathing are fine, but...vet thinks there might be some serious damage somewhere. We're getting a call later...

Need everything you've got, guys.

When I get into the orifice I will pass an early morning motion for you, or maybe (number) two (s).

Good luck to her, although it's hard to do the paperwork with your fingers crossed...
Breathing and reflexes are a good sign.

Thanks :) My wife's in bits - it's the waiting, as ever.

Ruby really is the coolest dog. 7 years old, and still blasting around the place like a puppy. She's tough as nails, but none of us can bear the possibility that this fall might've been too much :(

  • Just caught this on my way to the bog for said emissions.

Best of luck to you all.  Hope it's just shock or minor injury and she comes through fine.

  • Just had a call from the vet - she's responding well to anti-inflammatories and trying to sit up. She's moving her head a tiny bit, but she's apparently gone icy cold...they think it's shock, which they can deal with.

    Keep 'em coming, guys...

I know personally how easy it is to wake up with a "crick in the neck" and spend the next couple of days with your head on one side, completely unable to move it.  I am hopeful it's just something like that.  Shock does weird things too.  Good luck.

Any way back to the roll call - well the "bog roll" call anyway...

  • They're still trying to get her body temperature up...seems odd that it should take this long, but they don't seem excessively concerned.

shock ?  I do believe it takes longer for smaller animals to heat up due to the larger %  surface area to body mass for heat to escape ?

  • Just heard from the vet - she's doing much better now. Body temp's still a bit low, but coming up. She's still a bit zoned out (she's been on the equivalent of morphine), but she's moving about more - and, crucially, moving her head up and down as well as side to side. No bone damage on the x-rays either - they're keeping her in overnight to make sure there's no delayed swelling in the spinal soft tissue...

Bit early for a "phew", but everything's heading in the right direction :)

I don't know about the "too early for a phew" bit, because if you'd smelt my office khazi a few moments ago you might change your opinion. Fingers crossed!

Maybe we need a new thread about the most innovative shapes you can pull with a "ring thing" ?

Brings a new definition to "ring modulation" me-thinks...

Hope Ruby is still improving Lee.

  • OK, further update from the vet...she's OK standing now, but not very happy walking about (which is very unusual for her, even if she's not feeling well). She's also listing to the right, so they suspect possible brain swelling. However, her body temperature's much better - about 0.4 degrees below normal.

They're still keeping her in overnight, and if she hasn't noticeably improved by tomorrow lunchtime they think we should get a referral for an MRI to figure out what's up.

Thanks for the contributions, guys - not out of the woods yet, although we were worried that she might have to be PTS (gawd, it's hard even typing that) and at least that seems to be off the table now.
