Ok, yeah, bit of excitement and so forth… but can we stop discussing it now and get back to the topic
That was some good sport ball.

    Gutted.

Bringing on Sancho and Rashford to take penalties is a masterstroke if they score, and a massive blunder if they don't - it's a lottery, just like penalties.

I feel for all three of them - poor Saka especially must feel awful. Such young lads. I've no doubt they'll come back from this stronger.

I do feel that overall this tournament has been positive for England, but it won't feel that way for a couple of days yet. There's been a lot of sorely needed feel-good factor generated prior to tonight, and I don't really want that to end.

He insulted him calling him a C U Next Tuesday. He’s probably out smashing up a square somewhere now. His profile states he is in Northern Ireland so not sure why he is so angry.
It was quite out of character for him tbh.

penalties is a crap way to separate teams
It is, but I'm not sure what alternatives would be better.  Not Golden Goal, that's for sure.

I quite like that though tbh. At that point it’s still about the game itself rather than watching a defender trying to score a penalty. But as an ice hockey fan (mainly) I don’t watch football enough (at all!) to have an educated opinion about it

Yeah nearly as good as when he nearly ripped Saka's head off.

I watched this game at my place with an Irishman and ana Scotsman (My band!) which sounds like a bad joke, but we all agree that it that experienced game management won in the end. More beer before bed I’m afraid.

Well, Alan Shearer seems to partially agree with me .. but what does he know .. ;-)

"You have got to give Mancini and his players huge credit because they took a battering in the first half and he changed it around, he made the changes that needed to be made, he allowed Insigne to float a little bit more in the second half, they got on the ball, they couldn’t get in the little pockets in the first half, they did in the second half, and that was the difference - they found a way, as they did do in the semi-final, as they did do against Austria.

"This is a wily old team with great experience and you have to say congratulations to them, because at times [Italy] found it tough, but they got around that.

"It’s a big ask to put two players on and say ‘you’re going to take a penalty’. The pressure it puts on those lads - you’ve no feeling of the football, you’re not involved in the game at all, and then you’re put in that situation, it’s a big, big ask."

It was an entertaining game ..

Am obviously sorry that England lost, but it’s been one hell of a ride. Great manager, great team, and I am looking forward to watching them play again.

Poor game for a neutral rescued by the excitement of penalties. Italy shaded it over the piece, England showed why they aren't a truly elite team (yet) by sitting in first half when Italy were there for the taking.

Terrible decision to bring on specialist penalty takers, one of the only big mistakes Southgate has made in my opinion.

Feel terrible for the players who miss. Would have preferred Kane and Maguire to be the villains for no reason other than I have irrational dislikes of both of them.
I thought it was quite a good game but otherwise agree. England played better for the first half hour, but even by the end of the first half they’d switched to holding on, and from then on it was only a matter of time before Italy scored.

They were lucky to get to penalties. At least the misses are divided by three… can’t blame it on any of them individually.

Well, it’s a damn shame, and they certainly made mistakes tonight, but I think there’s some really big positives..

Unbeaten in the whole tournament in normal or extra time
Conceded only 2 goals right the way through to the final
Young team who have experience no England team has had for half a century
Got to the final against a team described right from the start as the best team in the tournament and they couldn’t beat us in normal or extra time
Displayed a totally different style of team and style of behaviour - no egos, no WAGs, and presented themselves as a proper team.

They should be proud of themselves

A good tournament for England, but Southgate has been lucky at times, and his subs are mystifying.

Oh, and apparently weve been ‘meticulous’ in our preparation, anD practiced our penalties for a month. Do me a favour…

I dont buy it, and I dont buy the conservative defensive approach we adopt.

The best team won tonight with 2 DeFenDers in their late 30s.

Really not sure why he got a yellow card for that.

I'd have thought a 6-12 month stretch would have been more appropriate.

I'm sure all those nice fans in Leicester Square will be helping with the tidy up about now.
It was a crushing loss and I'm not really a footy guy, such a feeling of inevitability I watched it in my workplace which is a kids home, they're bouncing off the walls now, gonna be a looong night ffs

Cautious approach caught up in the end but it did get them a long way. I have no understanding of why Mount is so valued, good first touch and defensive effort but not enough end product going forward today and most of the tournament.

    Rice played well today.

    overall an improvement though

    I don’t know why that wasn’t a red card.

I’m celebrating now. But it’s bitter sweet, just because as a fan I relate to the pain of losing major final. The first goal was a kick in the stomach, and with that crowd roaring England on I feared the worst. Mancini got it right tactically in doing everything possible to hold onto the ball because prolonged England possession spurred on the crowd and the players, who fed off each other. It was a compliment to the quality of England that we played that way, looking for the odd opening and generally stifling any momentum. Was a luck of the draw in the end.
