  • Craig’s version of Bond wasn’t sophisticated enough in my view. Too thuggy by far. Fleming’s Bond was a gentleman bon viveur, not a labourer on a building site,

Craig would look more at home in a transport cafe than The Ritz. Tom Hardy looks even less sophisticated, and almost certaintly shops in Lidl.

Seems that NTTD has been put back again. This time until April next year.

I’d prefer Hardy or Cavill to a PC rehash with Helen Mirren or something.

^ I’m not against a Jane Bond version, the new 00 in NTTD looks promising for that option.

While I like Hardy, he wouldn’t be my first choice.

Cavill’s performance in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Is the best Bond we’ve seen yet imo, and he seems to have the chops to keep going for 3 or 4 films at least - depending how much CV-19 slows things down.

Apparently Cavell's too young and Hardy will be getting on a bit so maybe two films for Hardy before Cavell takes over.

Jane Bond is a daft idea - just create a new female secret agent like Lara Croft. The Enola Holmes Mysteries have been turned into a Netflix series - Enola is the cleverer sister of Sherlock Holmes imagined by Nancy Springer. Why not just create a new character? That's too hard .. just milk a successful format and make Sherlock and his brother Mycroft look stupid. The Conan Doyle estate is suing Netflix.

That's what reports in the papers said. Tom Hardy is 43. Maybe they want older actors .. Roger Moore was nearly in a zimmer frame before he gave up.

Agreed. Leave Bond as he was meant to be.

If there’s a new PC secret agent (such as Croft), no doubt we will all still watch the film, whatever flavour the main character might be. As long as the locations are exotic, with a decent storyline, it’ll be fine.

Hardy will fit perfectly into the roll, although Michael Fassbender would be my first choice.

I'd never thought of Fassbender, he might be quite good... but again, he's getting on a bit.

I think they should be brave and go for somebody younger.  Connery was only 32 (admittedly an old looking 32) in Dr. No.  If they ruled out Henry Cavill for being too young that's crazy.

Tom Hardy came into our coffee shop once, he was pleasant enough, but tiny.

No Americans!  I don't really care any more if Bond is white, black, straight, gay, a man, a woman, non-binary... but please, no Americans doing terrible British accents!

Anyway... I'd never heard of two of the three you mentioned, but all of them are way too old.

That's so he can fit in the TV.

Small guys make better action actors these days .. Tom Cruise in tiny .. something to do with the cameras .. I can't recall exactly why. The current Bond isn't that tall ..

A friend of mine and ex-forumite acted beside Tom Cruise once. He had to stand on something. He was a nice guy and apparently he does most of his own stunts.

I generally agree, but they’ve already got a good world built out with the Bond-verse, it’s big enough for one more agent!  =)

I read something about the Enola Holmes lawsuit earlier, apparently it’s more to do with Cavill’s portrayal of Sherlock being more akin to the more emotional character in the later private-domain books, rather than the colder public-domain character that most people are familiar with. I haven’t seen any confirmation either way though, so I’ll happily be corrected.

That's what it says in Wikipedia. The Enola Holmes character isn't new, she's been around in book form since 2006 ( the Mysteries as mentioned) so if it was simply for the names/ characters they could have done that already.
Having watched the Enola Holmes film I thought it was a clever reimagining of the Holmes legacy, certainly not just a female Holmes. Parallel to the legacy of Sherlock I guess; for my money a female Bond that similarly ran on parallel lines ( or 'within the Bond universe') seems fine.

I don't see the point. It's just cashing in on an established character. Hollywood/Netflix/TV has lost the plot with extended franchises and remakes. Sherlock Holmes was written in the late 1800s onwards .. 2006 is yesterday .. someone cashing in on another author's idea after the copyright expired.

I think you're both right.  There's room in the Holmes and Bond "universes" for additional stories and characters, but yes of course they're just cashing in on established characters - for film and TV producers it must be much easier to sell a project if it's attached to a recognised name, even if it's essentially unrelated.

I wonder if Salt, Red Sparrow, Atomic Blonde or The Rhythm Section would have done better if they'd been sold as "female Bond" films?
