It’s added to the morbid story of the Titanic for sure. At least the end would have been rapid for them.

Yes - if they were in trouble, was definitely a quicker and more merciful way to go.
I'm relieved for the crew, really.

People are dying all the time, preventable wars and famines mainly, yet not a word about them. A few millionaires and the media is all over the situation. Sorry for the families of those onboard but sorry too for the victims in Ukraine and elsewhere.

Now that a detailed 3D map has been created there's no reason to visit again save perhaps for occasional updates on how the structure is degrading. Tourism to the site is in bad taste even if they dress the visitors up as 'mission specialists'. Perhaps it's time to leave Titanic to rest in peace.

RIP all those on board, at least it would have been quick.

Not sure what all the knocking was about? I think they need to test their equipment.

It’s often heard during these search ops apparently- usually coming from the other ships in the search

Does the company have any assets left to sue for, given the Titan itself was probably where all the money went?

Air travel is in fact very, very safe. The misleading statistics cited earlier will be referring to GA. Normal RPT (i.e. proper airline) travel is far, far safer than GA.

Either way, the idea of getting as far away from the sea as possible seems very appealing right now, even in a DC10…

No they aren't. "Because the above figures are focused on providing a perspective to the realm of everyday transportation, air travel is taken to include only standard civil passenger aviation, as offered commercially to the general public." GA is not included (and is much more dangerous).

The statistics are not misleading - just the way they are usually quoted is. Air travel *is* the safest form of transport by distance travelled... but that it isn't necessarily the most important statistic.

I would imagine that experimental submersibles are probably above even the Space Shuttle, for what it's worth.

well, if there's anything to be gained from this horrible incident I hope it's that always listen to materials scientists when you're designing something that's gonna be subjected to a metric fuckload of pressure. Leave the maverick shit to ventures where no one's gonna die if it goes tits up.

The only thing I wonder is...why even go down there? It's not like the submersible had windows so they could see the Titanic with their own eyes - near as I can tell, it was all based on cameras through screens on the interior.

Maybe I'm completely missing the point...? Just seems an awful lot of risk (obviously) for the same experience you'd get staying on the ship piloting an unmanned craft down there.

Actually it had powerful lights and a perspex end cap to look through. The perspex end cap was the bit that experts said was a weak point that could cause the vessel to implode but Stockton Rush arrogantly dismissed that.
