There was a film, too - which I've never seen, but was a complete turkey by all accounts despite featuring Jason Robards, Alec Guinness and some others who should all probably have known better.

The bit below water (the keel?) looks ginormous on the book. 

I don't recall it being a historical account, so maybe call it artistic licence

Unconfirmed transcript of sub's communication with Polar Prince has been apparently been leaked.  If the content is true then the crew knew for 15 - 20 minutes that things were critical before the implosion!

Major news outlets are all silent at the moment, which probably means they are trying to verify it's authenticity.

I won't post any links as it could all be BS, but it seems plausible nonetheless.  A simple Google search will tell you all you need to know and you can decide for yourself.
