I would be happy with enough to cover my rent in a small one bedroom flat in Torquay  & enough to pay for the needed utilities and food & about £50 to £60 a week spare . Icing on the cake would be 1 or 2 thousand in the bank

They bought the carbon fibre at a discount from Boeing because it was pat it’s use by date and no longer viable for them to work with, so the answer is probably “not much”
Seems that was a lie too.  Boeing had no record of any communication or sale.  Probably picked up some scrap.

Boeing may be being deliberately disingenuous - they really don't want to be associated with this debacle in any way if they can possibly avoid it. It's not impossible that Oceangate bought it via a third party.

Or maybe it was indeed just some other surplus stock from somewhere else. It seems bizarre to me that Rush would trust his own life to something so questionable and amateurish, but it appears that he did.

His whole justification for "innovation" along the lines of "the Wright brothers would never have got off the ground if they worried about regulations" overlooks two enormous things... one, a *huge* number of early aviation pioneers were killed doing it; and two, modern engineering theory and materials science is so much more sophisticated compared to the barely-understood trial and error of 120 years ago that it bears no relation at all. If competent engineers thought the Titan was an accident waiting to happen, it's unsurprising that they were proven right.

"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski

"Only two things are infinite - the universe, and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the universe." - Albert Einstein

BBC news article about a woman who saved her whole life for the trip to the Titanic wreck.
    Nothing like obsession is there?
includes footage of the Titan submersible. Made
    me feel ill.

So prepreg carbonfibre does have a "shelf life" in that it for aerospace it should only be stored in the freezers for about 6 months and then a limited life outside. But I can't see in such a cost and safety regulated industry, Boeing ever carry enough stock that is would exceed that time. And then even if it did, it would make sense to scrap the material to offset the cost rather than selling it on and create a taxable sale.

It’s only the resin that has the shelf life, technically carbon fibres last a long time.

It's the "perfect tragedy" if you like, all of society crammed onto what at the time was man's greatest achievement, a vast, luxurious and fast ocean liner.

She symbolises the past, with it's class system, its hubris, its lack of technical finesse by our standards by being the very peak of its time.
Yes, a part of the fascination must also be the fact that the passengers were among the world's elite. If the ship had been carrying migrants to Ellis Island, I can't imagine that it would have stirred up such interest.

Yes although the majority of her company were indeed working class travelling "steerage" - who were locked below decks etc. etc. (though I remember there was not any real evidence for actively locking the poor people below decks).

Did they throw in one of those "dive randomly towards the ground and kill everyone" systems for free?

One of the most bonkers books ever written, probably!

There was a film, too - which I've never seen, but was a complete turkey by all accounts despite featuring Jason Robards, Alec Guinness and some others who should all probably have known better.

    I've seen it - it's shit.

The "intact Titanic" is one of the most incredible things about the story in that most survivors remembered the ship nosing over and going down in one piece - despite the fact... it didn't...  it split in half while still on the surface like in the film.

One surviving crew member drew a picture of what actually happened, but the enquiry ignored him because everyone else said it sank in one piece.  He wasn't proved right until Ballard found the wreck split in two (we only ever really get shown the bow which remained largely intact, the stern was smashed to bits).

Yeah, I know it was made of offcuts from B&Q.
I just wondered if its cost was ever officially stated.

The only cost will have been the fuel driving to and from the Boeing factory to retrieve the carbon fibre from the dumpster round the back.

Is that what the titanic looked like? It's a weird shape!

Came across this one last week, yet another voice who told Stockton Rush to abandon the notion of building a sub from CF:

There is no 'H' in Aych, you know that don't you? ~ Wife

Turns out there is an H in Haych! ~ Sporky

    Bit of trading feedback here.

The bit below water (the keel?) looks ginormous on the book.
