I think the difference is that MR wasn't perceived as a pub. It was more like meeting your mates in a guitar shop during the day, so there might be children or women about (and, oddly, there were), so people tended to be (a bit) less vulgar. Perhaps because it was known to be overseen by a corporate? Not sure.

Now the attitude is different. It's seen as a pub so there is less respect generally.

I note Clare Bear's post is disappearing, and the slug-fests increasing.

Still, if pub culture is your thing....
