I need to get better guns. I'm amazed I've got this far with the weapons I have. 

 Luckily I have paladin dance helping me out!

Me too, except I have Plinky, Ta-Da!, BigTrubble and so on.

I called my armour MyHat, MyJumper, MyLeftArmband and so on so I could find it easily in my inventory. Then I switched to an armoured dress.

I find that the Minutemen General outfit works for me.  Both practcal and stylish.

Army fatigues and a good trilby. Get the ballistic weave. It's ESSENTIAL
