  • Rush - Time Stand Still. I love Lifeson's tone, especially in this song. Plus, Geddy's voice is more tolerable ;)

"The Rich Man's Eight Track Tape" by Big Black. It's their first album "Atomizer" plus some unreleased stuff.

Might even be better than "Songs About Fucking". It's brilliant, some of the most wonderfully hellish noise ever committed to tape.

It's just such a great sound. The constantly pounding drum machine, the grinding bass and the shrill, needling guitars... even though it's a deliberately lo-fi punk album from the mid 80s it still sounds enormous, imposing and angry. Best track:

When it stops at 4:45 and crashes back in even louder at 4:48... amazing. Listen to the rest of it beforehand for maximum impact :D

Is that Duff McKagan playing acoustic too??

I don't know if it counts as "what I have been mostly listening to" but I keep getting Miss Adventure by AC/DC off the new album stuck in my head "ooh, that's nice!" :p

JJ72, perfectly created pop, unfortunately disbanded in 2006, apparently after lack of support from their label and now apparently completely forgotten.

Patti Smith. I've had Horses for years and liked it but never quite got fully into it (though always heard it was her definitive album), and a few other tracks from a damaged copy of the 'Land' compilation, but yesterday I got a complete copy of Land… just fantastic. I much prefer a lot of her later stuff, in fact.

There's also a great cover of 'When Doves Cry' which I wasn't expecting to like - the original is very distinctive and I thought a reworking might be a bit odd - but is just brilliant.

I think I need to get the other original albums now...
